Skills for Society: Driving an impact through our community of solvers

Through Skills for Society, which provides our people 40 hours of utilized time each year to give back, our 65,000 employees are coming together, leveraging their professional skills, personal purpose and our technology to make a tangible impact on our world.

Our people’s work focuses on education and social justice, but also impacts the wider opportunity gaps society faces, such as health, climate and disaster response.

  • Since 2020, our people have donated 600,000 hours of volunteer work to support racial justice, primarily with nonprofits focused on K-12 and college education and economic empowerment.

  • In FY22, 5,000 PwCers volunteered 200,000+ hours of their time and delivered $40M worth of pro bono services.

Driving an impact through our community of solvers

Soon after joining PwC, Business Services Senior Associate Lily Lamb joined her local Women’s Inclusion Network (WIN) and helped plan a Women’s Empowerment virtual event to help women upskill in economic development. “When you’re able to take your professional skills and translate them into skilled volunteering, the opportunity becomes that much more special,” says Lamb.

Skills for Society projects are designed to be citizen-led and offer a variety of personalized ways to give back, including:

  • Short-term projects: An opportunity to help a nonprofit address an issue that aligns with our people’s personal purpose over an extended period of time, by working as part of a team to help solve a specific challenge.
  • Half-day virtual events and sessions: Our people can join a PwC team working with one or several nonprofits to help tackle a specific challenge they’re facing over the course of a day.
  • Nonprofit board service: Our nonprofit board program helps match our people with nonprofits that align with their personal purpose, so they can serve on nonprofit boards. To date, we’ve placed over 500 PwCers to boards.

Trust Solutions Director Katie Matheson used the nonprofit board placement program to begin discussions with organizations working to combat human trafficking. "Using this program, I was introduced to an organization that empowers human trafficking survivors. By combining my purpose and passions with my professional skills and getting involved in organizations I care about, I’m driving meaningful change."

Workforce Transformation Manager Santa Rojas: “I joined a fee-waived project to support a nonprofit in Mexico that supports suicide prevention in LGBTQ+ youth. It's extremely gratifying to share our experiences, knowledge and methodology with an organization that will benefit our society.”

Trust Solutions Partner Eddie Cha: “I have a true passion for environmental sustainability and wanted to leverage my experience working with energy, technology, clean energy and tech companies to contribute my expertise to my local community. I became involved in board service to bring people together to create local solutions to help ensure we have a healthy planet.”

Consulting Solutions Senior Manager Naimah Allie: “As a South African Muslim woman, creating awareness and understanding about religious and non-religious differences is important to me. I sit on the board of a nonprofit that has empowered us at PwC to stand up our own religious affinity networks so our people can have a relatable community and better sense of belonging at work.”

Empowering our community of solvers to give back, at the intersection of their personal passions and professional skills, is core to how we act on our purpose. For more information on how we’re making a difference in our communities, read our FY22 Purpose & Inclusion Report.
