PwC’s Thrive program, launched in 2020, is an innovative experience that provides support to new Black and Latino/Hispanic associates in the first two years of their careers through mentorship, intentional two-way learning and opportunities for participants to connect and grow together.
Building Strong Connections & Community:
At the core of Thrive lies its emphasis on fostering connections and establishing a sense of belonging among participants. Chief People Officer, Yolanda Seals-Coffield, has witnessed firsthand how the program can connect first and second-year associates with their peers, Partners and mentors who can help guide them.
“Thrive is an incredible leadership development opportunity for our first and second-year associates. It provides them with the opportunity to form connections and bonds, to connect with their peer group and also to spend some time connecting with our Partners and individuals who are going to help support them toward success.”
Thrive alumni, Davele Zephyr, took advantage of her time in the program to network and grow her connections, which has been helpful to growing her career at PwC.
“When I reflect on what it takes to be successful at PwC, developing strong relationships is key. Thrive has been integral to growing my network and helping me navigate professional opportunities. I’ve seen firsthand the value of nurturing the relationships I’ve built and being intentional about who I invite to my network.”
As a part of the program, Thrivers are developing a strong community of peers and leaders who can support them throughout their development at the firm. Thrive Partner Champion Noel Bowers has provided ongoing mentorship through the program, which has underscored to her the sense of community the program provides.
“Thrive to me is a community of people who know what you need and what you desire and recognize the potential you have to be amazing at whatever you do. It’s also a community that resonates with where you’re from, where you’re going, and can help give you tools for success at PwC and beyond.”
Empowering Leadership Development:
Thrive offers a wide-ranging curriculum that focuses on leadership development and upskilling to help our people grow personally and professionally. Chief Purpose & Inclusion Officer Shannon Schuyler applauds the program’s ability to help support Thrivers to take their careers to the next level.
“Thrive serves as a transformative opportunity for individuals to not only build upon their existing accomplishments that led them to PwC, but also to grow their skills, expand their network, and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Through Thrive, participants are empowered to intentionally seek a sense of belonging on a personal level, while simultaneously being supported toward success.”
Another key component of Thrive is helping associates find their voice and sense of confidence in the workplace. Thrive Partner Champion Gaby Alejandro encourages Thrivers he connects with to embrace bold moves as a part of their takeaways on how to advance their careers.
“The biggest advice I’ve received during my own career is not to be afraid of taking bold moves. There have been many times throughout my career where I’ve been asked to move abroad, to take on a new client assignment, or to change industries. If it wasn’t for those big bold moves, I wouldn’t be where I am today, so I hope our Thrivers can get comfortable with embracing the next big move that will help take them to the next level in their careers.”
Fully investing in the experience and opportunities, Thrive helps prepare associates to be successful, even after they complete the program. Thrive Alumni, Orlando Berges, credits the program for equipping him with the skills and network to plan his career trajectory successfully.
“I was a part of Thrive and recently graduated from the program last year. Based on my experience, it’s a great program to get the tools to help prepare you for your career. One of the first sessions I had at Thrive was focused on personal brand development and it really helped me plan out how I wanted to present myself to others and what I was going to do to get to that next position. I was able to gain skills, connect with many people that built out my network and opportunities at the firm.”
Embracing Your Personal Career Journey:
Throughout their Thrive journey, associates learn the importance of building a solid professional foundation and building trust-based relationships. In addition to skill development and helpful career navigation strategies, Thrive is helping our people embrace their authentic selves in the workplace with confidence.
“Words cannot fully capture the impact of Thrive. It serves as a great platform for self-growth, networking, and learning from experienced professionals within the organization. Through the program, I obtained a newfound sense of purpose and determination, providing me with a clear goal for my journey at PwC. My Thrive experience has also underscored the importance of building relationships and fostering connections within the organization. Through the program, you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge, develop new skills, and gain insights that can positively impact your career trajectory.”
“Thrive provided me with the chance to build a network of incredibly talented and bright individuals that I will leverage for the rest of my time at the firm and beyond. Additionally, the program taught me that you must be your own biggest advocate - it is crucial that you are always speaking up for yourself and verbalizing your goals. Through the lessons Thrive has taught me, I have gained confidence and made connections that have helped me to succeed in my first year. Based on my experience, I encourage anyone starting their Thrive journey to embrace the opportunity and go all in!”
“The most valuable takeaway I gained from Thrive is the importance of fostering trust-based relationships with peers and PwC leaders who can serve as allies throughout my career journey. By immersing myself in the wealth of knowledge, skills, and connections offered through the two-year program, I will be equipped with tools to help me excel at PwC. The mentorship and guidance provided by experienced professionals will also further enhance my growth and development. For those who may be uncertain about joining Thrive, I offer this advice: you stand to lose nothing but have the potential to gain everything.”
“Thrive is a network of people who really care about their careers and community and are willing to help each other grow. Through this network, I’m able to learn from my peers’ experiences at PwC and apply those learnings to my own career journey to continue to reach my personal goals. Not only do I feel like I have endless opportunities to grow, I also realized that I have a huge community that I can connect beyond a professional level but also at a personal level. Thrive also showed me that I can be myself and be professional at the same time - PwCers have a lot of diverse perspectives and bringing that unique point of view to work will only add on to our success.”
