El Camino Health improves supply chain management with Workday

PwC gets the client’s perspective

El Camino Health is a nationally recognized community healthcare system that serves the Silicon Valley region with two acute care hospitals and primary care, multi-specialty care and urgent care locations. The healthcare system is committed to delivering high-quality care using advanced technology and research. The organization sought a strategic advisor to help it implement Workday Supply Chain Management.

Interview with:
Paul Hasbrook
Senior Director, Supply Chain and Expense Management,
El Camino Health

What was the challenge?

“We needed to transition away from our legacy ERP applications within nine months to minimize the impact on our other active projects. We also wanted to transform our supply chain organization by reducing manual processes and automating our back office. We didn’t have mobile functionality with our legacy applications, which limited our efficiency in managing inventory.”

Describe the solution delivered by the PwC community of solvers.

“PwC’s healthcare playbook served as the foundation that helped us build cutting-edge solutions. These leading practices enabled us to launch within the tight timeframe and achieve our transformational goals. PwC used its Workday healthcare model system — which provides prebuilt process configurations, integrations and data conversion tools specific to the industry — to help us design a future state tailored to our needs, without having to start from zero. Additionally, the team introduced us to automation capabilities within Workday to better manage our data pipelines. This allowed us to spend less time focusing on accessing the right data quickly, and more on ways we could transform the business.”

How does the solution blend the strengths of technology and people?

“PwC’s extensive experience in healthcare, along with its Workday solutions and healthcare playbook, helped us accelerate our timeline and reduce operational risk during the project. The team created an all-inclusive dashboard so business unit leaders can manage day-to-day operations and integrations from anywhere using only a tablet or mobile device.”

Where or how did innovation and unexpected ways of thinking come into play?

“We used PwC’s healthcare industry insight, our transformation requirements and our existing reporting to better understand how data flows through Workday and into third-party systems. That allowed us to improve our reporting capabilities and build new dashboards with the PwC team. We now have a real-time view into back office operations and can immediately answer questions about items, orders or suppliers.”
