Jakarta, ID – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has inaugurated the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads in Aceh Province. The inauguration took place in Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh Province, on Tuesday (15/10).

In his remarks, President Jokowi emphasised that the development of roads and bridges to improve connectivity between regencies, cities, and provinces is crucial for the mobility of both passengers and goods.

“Damaged roads will hinder logistics mobility, which will, in turn, affect prices for the people,” Jokowi said, cited from the official website setkab.go.id on Tuesday (15/10/2024).

The President added that, in 2023, the government issued the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads to develop and repair damaged roads and bridges.

“Today, we are inaugurating 24 road segments spanning 196 kilometres (km) and bridges spanning 60 metres,” Jokowi explained.

The President mentioned that the total budget for the projects outlined in the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads in Aceh Province reached Rp686 billion. These projects are scattered across 14 regencies, namely East Aceh, Bireuen, Simeulue, Aceh Besar, Pidie, Pidie Jaya, Langsa, North Aceh, Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Jaya, Southwest Aceh, Nagan Raya, Gayo Lues, and Bener Meriah.

“By developing and repairing these roads, the mobility of passengers, goods, and logistics distribution in Aceh Province will improve,” he added.

Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads for FY23 to be completed

The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry, through the Highways Directorate General, has completed the development of projects outlined in the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads for FY23 across Indonesia.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the implementation of the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads referred to Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2023 on the Acceleration of the Improvement of Connectivity for Regional Roads.

“The Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads aims to improve regional road connectivity and infrastructure, ensuring a smooth flow of logistics and facilitating access to production centres,” Basuki said on a separate occasion.

Expert Staff to the PUPR Minister for Technology, Industry, and the Environment and PUPR Ministry Spokesperson, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, explained that, nationally, the budget allocated to implement the Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads for FY23 reached Rp14.6 trillion. This budget covers a total road length of 3,300 km across 34 provinces in Indonesia.

“The Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads aims to connect production centres, such as plantations, tourism destinations, and industrial estates, with ports, airports, markets, and other primary infrastructure. This ensures that productive areas in regions are linked by standardised roads, which feature 1-metre-wide shoulders and 5-metre-wide roadways,” Endra explained.
