Jakarta, ID – The Bali Provincial Government has announced that plans to build the North Bali Airport are on hold pending a decision from the central government.

Acting Bali Governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya stated that the central government will choose the location for the North Bali Airport from the several options identified in the studies on the air transportation infrastructure construction.

"Later, the central government will decide on the alternatives. There are pros and cons to consider. Will it be in eastern or western North Bali?" Sang Made Mahendra Jaya said, as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Wednesday (13/11/2024).

However, the head of the Bali Provincial Government did not elaborate on the pros and cons of the two potential airport locations.

He mentioned that his team has submitted several studies on the construction of the North Bali Airport to the central government.

"We have submitted them, and they are currently being reviewed. We have proposed that they be implemented as soon as possible," he stated.

The plan to construct the North Bali Airport has been under discussion for 10-15 years and often resurfaces during political events, such as regional head elections.

Previously, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed his commitment to constructing air transportation infrastructure in North Bali to enhance public welfare.

"I want to construct the North Bali International Airport. We will transform Bali into the new Singapore or Hong Kong, with this area as the centre," the Head of State said in Denpasar, Bali on Sunday (3/11).

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono explained that his team is reviewing the feasibility studies to ensure the airport's construction is thoroughly planned.

In addition to thorough planning, he added that the project would also be supported by a sufficient budget and take various aspects into consideration.

"If everything is ready and all technical, political, sociocultural and other aspects have been considered, I believe we can proceed with it," he added at the Risk Management Forum held by the Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) in Sanur, Denpasar on Monday (11/11).

On a separate occasion, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo mentioned that the plan to construct the North Bali Airport has been studied with consideration of various aspects and involvement from multiple sectors.

"The studies have been completed. Now, it is up to President Prabowo to make the decision," the Public Works Minister stated recently.

He noted that the construction of airport infrastructure involves not only the Public Works Ministry but also other ministries and institutions, such as the Transportation Ministry and the Forestry Ministry.

"There is the Transportation Ministry and others involved. There are also forestry matters to consider, as one of the plans involves land that includes protected forests," he stated.
