Investor Daily - Infrastruktur sanitasi layak berperan turunkan stunting
29 November 2024
Jakarta, ID – Public Works (PU) Minister Dody Hanggodo highlighted that adequate and evenly distributed water and sanitation infrastructure are crucial in reducing stunting in Indonesia.
"The availability of adequate and evenly distributed water and sanitation infrastructure is essential for reducing stunting. Addressing stunting requires more than just providing food; the availability of water and infrastructure is also crucial," Dody stated in Jakarta on Thursday (28/11/2024).
He mentioned that the PU Ministry is prepared to tackle water issues by developing water infrastructure to enhance water and food security both nationally and globally.
"We are also working towards achieving the target of 100% access to drinking water and 100% access to sanitation by 2030. One of the solutions is the implementation of Presidential Instruction No. 1/2024 on the Acceleration of Drinking Water Supply and Domestic Wastewater Management Service," he stated.
Min Kyaw Htet, the Physical Component Head and Researcher at the Action Against Stunting Hub (AASH), stated that improving access to clean water and sanitation is one of the measures to prevent stunting.
Pathogens present in drinking water and water used daily can lead to inflammation of the intestines, resulting in changes to intestinal structure and function.
This condition is known as Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED). EED leads to suboptimal absorption of iron, and if it persists, children may experience growth issues.
He noted that, according to a study conducted in Indonesia in 2016, inadequate sanitation doubles the likelihood of stunting.
