Roadmap for Tourism Infrastructure Development in Manado

PwC Indonesia had the privilege to take part in the Manado International Conference on Tourism Investment which was hosted by Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).  As requested by BKPM chairman, Thomas Lembong, PwC Indonesia delivered a concept master plan and roadmap for tourism infrastructure development at the conference which was held from 22-24 May 2017 in Manado.

In his presentation at the conference, Julian Smith, PwC Indonesia Infrastructure Investment Adviser highlighted:

“This investment needs to consider the needs of the community in order to be sustainable and profitable for investors. Hence the roadmap prepared by PwC stresses the need for the government to implement a new management strategy and investment plan to protect the fragile ecosystem of the marine park as well as investment by public and private sector in essential infrastructure such as solid waste treatment and waste water treatment.”

He also explained that Manado is at the stage right now when it needs to finalise its vision of the type of destination it wants to be and ensure the right plans are in place to deliver the benefits of international investment in tourism and related infrastructure.

PwC Indonesia is working jointly with Broadway Malyan on the concept masterplan and roadmap for infrastructure development.

At the conference, Monique Suksmaningsih, Director of Masterplanning from Broadway Malyan presented the vision planning and key development zones in Manado. She said that the plan for the development zones highlights the new potential sites to develop, but also focuses on revitalising the existing Manado waterfront area.

She added, "This is a fantastic opportunity to transform Manado and create a new destination in East Asia, bringing investment to the area and changing the economic outlook. Our approach focuses on combining development, environmental and social sustainability as we believe these aspects will be essential to the future success of Manado’s tourism plan."

Manado, the capital city of the North Sulawesi province of Indonesia, is located within three to five hours flight of the majority of the East Asian tourism market. It is the closest tropical Indonesian destination to China, and benefits from being outside the cyclone zone. Thus, it offers an all year round return on investment for tourism investors.
