By Sabrina Rhamadanty
PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) announced a reduction of 921,119 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2024. This significant achievement was accomplished by utilising biomass to decrease coal usage in coal-fired power plants (PLTUs) through the cofiring programme.
PLN IP President Director Edwin Nugraha Putra stated that the implementation of cofiring in 2024 produced 814 GWh of green energy. This initiative has been proven to positively impact the environment by reducing carbon emissions by 921,119 tonnes of CO2.
“The programme makes a significant contribution to the green energy supply in Indonesia,” Edwin stated in his written statement received by Kontan on Sunday (2/2).
Edwin revealed that, throughout 2024, PLN IP successfully utilised 793,060 tonnes of biomass to reduce coal consumption. The biomass included wood pellets, waste, palm shells, sawdust, rice husks, and waste from producing paper money as raw materials for cofiring in PLTUs.
“PLN IP remains steadfast in its commitment to reducing coal usage by utilising biomass for cofiring in PLTUs,” Edwin stated.
He mentioned that, as the largest subholding generation company in Southeast Asia, PLN IP is consistently supporting PLN in accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia to help the government achieve its net zero emission target by 2060.
“This is a significant step by the corporation to support the national energy transition and create a cleaner, more sustainable future,” he added.
Edwin also mentioned that PLN IP will persist in developing technological innovations to reduce emissions in Indonesia, ensuring that the electricity sector plays a significant role in cutting carbon emissions.
“PLN IP is open to collaborating with various parties to develop technologies that can reduce carbon emissions,” Edwin added.
