Surabaya, ID – PT Pelindo Multi Terminal (SPMT), one of the subholdings of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia or Pelindo (Persero), is currently carrying out transformation and standardisation efforts across five of its non-container terminals.

SPMT Operations Director Arif Rusman Yulianto explained that the five non-container terminals where transformation efforts were carried out this year were Malahayati (Surabaya), Lhokseumawe (Aceh), Pare Pare and Garongkong (South Sulawesi), and Lembar Port (West Nusa Tenggara/NTB).

According to him, the transformation initiative implemented by the company will focus on six key pillars, namely business processes, human resources, technology, equipment, infrastructure, and health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE).

“So far, the terminals undergoing transformation have reached maturity level 3, and we are committed to ongoing development. Our efforts will persist as we focus on optimising operations and expanding our business,” Arif said at SPMT’s media sharing with several journalists in Surabaya, East Java on Tuesday (6/2/2024).

Arif said that, throughout 2023, SPMT implemented its transformation initiative at 24 of its ports. This involved digitalising planning and control processes as well as improving traffic flow, resulting in more streamlined stevedoring activities.

“So, in the last two years, SPMT has transformed 25 terminals in its work areas,” he explained.

Since taking over terminal operations, SPMT has persistently implemented transformation processes with the aim of standardising all the ports under its management throughout Indonesia. This transformation journey commenced with the standardisation of Tanjung Intan Port in Cilacap.

Arif emphasised that through the ongoing transformation and standardisation efforts, the operational improvements across all ports are anticipated to have a positive impact on productivity, measured in tonnes per ship per day, while significantly reducing port stay and cargo stay durations. This positive trend is expected to extend to the other 24 ports as well.

For example, he mentioned that the productivity of Jamrud Nilam Mirah Terminal significantly increased by 31% from before the transformation.

“Previously, Jamrud Nilam Mirah Terminal in Surabaya could only accommodate 1,385 tonnes per ship per day. After the transformation and standardisation efforts were implemented, its productivity increased by up to 31% to 1,814 tonnes per ship per day. The same goes for other non-container terminals that we have transformed and standardised,” he stated.

In 2023, SPMT reported favourable performance in its dry bulk cargo traffic, encompassing coal, iron ore, sugar, soybeans, and more, with a notable year-on-year (YoY) increase of 5.9% or 55.1 million tonnes. Concurrently, its liquid bulk cargo witnessed a YoY growth of 8.9% or 30.3 million tonnes.

In the same period, its general cargo and bag cargo traffic also experienced a noteworthy increase of 9.8% or 25.2 million tonnes compared to 2022. Additionally, its gas cargo traffic surged by an impressive 49.8% or 13.1 million MMBTu.

The same goes for its vehicle cargo traffic that also increased to 1.5 million units by 8.4% from 2022. Its container traffic also increased by 1.1% from 2022 to 429 thousand TEUs.

More integrated

To support the port transformation process, SPMT is implementing an integrated multiterminal port operating system called PTOS-M (Pelindo Terminal Operating System Multipurpose) that is a strategic initiative of Pelindo Group.

PTOS-M is a platform designed to facilitate operations, particularly for non-container cargo, with a focus on planning and control. PTOS-M has an architecture integrated with other systems, such as the customer portal, the ship service system, and the financial service system.

Besides being integrated with several systems, PTOS-M has several features that facilitate services, such as online booking requests, operation planning, storage inventory, and control and monitoring.

Meanwhile, to improve end-to-end services for users to increase its market share, SPMT will upgrade the status of multipurpose terminals to dedicated terminals. These terminals include Ujung Baru Liquid Bulk Terminal, Ujung Baru Dry Bulk Terminal, IKD 2 and IKD 3 Liquid Bulk Terminals of Belawan Port, CPO I and CPO II Liquid Bulk Terminals of Bagendang Port, Dock C Dry Bulk Terminal and Dock B Liquid Bulk Terminal of Dumai Port, Multipurpose 2 Dry Bulk Terminal of Tanjung Intan Port, Jetties 1 and 2 Liquid Bulk Terminals of Bumiharjo Port, as well as Martapura Baru Liquid Bulk Terminal of Trisaksi Port.

In 2023, SPMT further expanded its business by collaborating in the operation of terminals for own interest (TUKS) belonging to state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private companies as well as ports belonging to ministries and institutions. Additionally, they also ventured into providing additional non-container services to pursue business expansion.
