Investor Daily: KAI Daop 4 kehilangan pemasukan Rp 1 miliar per hari: 21 perjalanan KA lokal Surabaya dibatalkan

15 April 2020

Jakarta – PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Region (Daop) 4 Semarang loses up to Rp1 billion in revenue daily due to the cancellation of train trips that are caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The daily average revenue was Rp1.2 billion, now it is only Rp114 million daily,” PT KAI Daop 4 Semarang Public Relations Manager Krisbiyantoro said in Semarang on Tuesday (14/4).

According to him, there are at least 54 train trips from various stations in Daop Semarang to various destinations that must be cancelled due to Covid-19. These cancellations are caused by the low train occupancy. The cancelled train trips consist of long distance and local trains.

He added that there were 14 train trips from Daop Semarang to Jakarta that must be cancelled due to the Large-Scale Social Distancing (PSBB) implementation.

Despite many cancelled train trips, he affirmed that trains were still available to serve citizens who must travel.

“For trains that are still operational, PT KAI is implementing protocols to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, such as only operating at 50% capacity and requiring passengers to wear masks,” he said.

Surabaya local train

On the other hand, PT KAI Daop 8 Surabaya will cancel 21 local train trips from 14 April 2002 to 30 April 2020. Previously, through six stages, there were 27 cancelled long and medium distance trains that should have operated in April.

For April 2020, the number of train trips that are not operational in Daop 8 Surabaya reaches 48 trains, which consist of 21 local trains and 27 long and medium distance trains. KAI Daop 8 Surabaya Public Relations Manager Suprapto said that there were 39 trains operational in April 2020, which consisted of 25 local trains and 14 long and medium distance trains. The cancelled local trains are trains that originated from Surabaya to other cities and East Java, such as Sidoarjo, Bangkil, Mojokerto, Lamongan, and Malang.

“For the 25 local trains that are still operational, we will only sell 50% of the tickets to realise physical distancing among passengers in the train, while normally local trains carry 150% of the maximum seating capacity,” Suprapto said earlier this week.

According to him, the cancellation of local and medium to long distance trains is caused by the lack of passengers in Daop 8 Surabaya. On 1 March 2020, the number of passengers boarding was still 40,148 daily and the number of passengers disembarking was 40,662 daily. On 12 April 2020, the number of passengers drastically plummeted by 90% to 4,313 passengers boarding daily and 5,607 passengers disembarking daily.

Due to the policy that reduces the capacity of trains, besides significantly fewer passengers, the number passengers cancelling their train trips also increased. From 1 to 13 April 2020, there were 18,031 tickets cancelled by passengers in Daop 8 Surabaya.

Suprapto said that, as of 12 April 2020, his company was starting to require passengers to wear masks at stations and in trains. Passengers who do not want to use masks will be prohibited from boarding trains and their tickets will be 100% refunded at the ticket counter.
