Jakarta, ID – The Transportation Ministry has inaugurated seven type A terminals since 2020. Recently, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated two type A terminals on Saturday (3/2).

The two terminals are Leuwipanjang Terminal in Bandung City and Banjar Terminal in Banjar City. President Jokowi hopes that the infrastructure can generate greater interest among the populace in using public transportation.

“Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious and The Most Merciful), today, I am inaugurating Leuwipanjang Terminal in Bandung City and Banjar Terminal in Banjar City in West Java Province,” the President said during the inauguration at Leuwipanjang Terminal in his press statement in Jakarta on Sunday (4/2/2024).

Leuwipanjang Terminal in Bandung City incurred a cost of Rp70 billion from the State Budget (APBN).

“It is awesome. It [is constructed] to encourage the population to use public transportation. So, they will no longer use private vehicles, including private cars,” he said.

The President emphasised that the terminal was anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion in West Java, particularly in Bandung City, thereby mitigating potential economic losses for the residents.

For example, the President mentioned that economic losses from traffic congestion in the Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi) area reached Rp100 trillion annually.

“I highly appreciate the construction. Hopefully, we can motivate people to embrace various modes of public transportation, such as buses, trains, MRT, LRT, the Commuter Line, and the high-speed railway. This collective effort will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on current roads,” he said.

Additionally, both terminals are anticipated to improve the mobility of people, whether they are traveling between cities or within the city itself.

“Hopefully, Leuwipanjang Terminal and Banjar Terminal in West Java can accelerate the mobility of individuals from one city to another or within the city itself,” he said.

Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the revitalisation of Leuwipanjang Terminal and Banjar Terminal was carried out to improve services for the people.

According to him, Leuwipanjang Terminal adopts the mixed-use concept, serving as a multipurpose modern terminal with three primary functions: a boarding and alighting point for buses, a regional economic catalyst, and a hub for social, art, and cultural activities.

“We have constructed Leuwipanjang Terminal to reach 30,000 metres. The terminal is next to a vehicle document registration centre (Samsat). It is a first in Indonesia, so it will be an example for other terminals all over Indonesia. Moreover, the ticketing [system] is already digitalised,” Budi said.

During the occasion, the Transportation Minister the Transportation Minister expressed his appreciation for the initiative taken by the regional governments in West Java, specifically in Bandung City, in implementing electric public transportation.

“We appreciate West Java and Bandung City for spearheading the use of electric buses in urban transportation. It aligns with the vision of employing electric vehicles for mass transportation,” Transportation Minister Budi Karya added.

From 2019 to 2024, the Land Transportation Directorate General of the Transportation Ministry has completed the construction of several type A terminals. The type A terminals that have been inaugurated include Entrop Type A Terminal in Jayapura, Mangkang Terminal in Semarang in Central Java, Purwokerto Terminal in Tirtonadi in Solo, Amplas Terminal in Medan, Tanjung Pinggir Terminal in Medan, Leuwipanjang Terminal in Bandung, and Banjar Terminal.

Supporting transportation infrastructure

Meanwhile, following his attendance alongside President Jokowi during the inauguration of Leuwipanjang Terminal and Banjar Terminal, the Transportation Minister visited various transportation hubs in Garut City, including Guntur Melati Type A Terminal and Garut Railway Station.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya said that the government continued to provide support for transportation infrastructure in Indonesia to promote public transportation usage among the people.

He also inspected Guntur Melati Terminal to ensure the quality of services. The terminal has been recognised with multiple awards, including an acknowledgment as the most user-friendly public service provider for vulnerable groups by the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PANRB).

“I visited Guntur Melati Terminal to personally assess the services, and I must say that the facilities at the terminal are excellent. During discussions with several passengers, they expressed their satisfaction with the services. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and appreciation for the commendable services offered,” the Transportation Minister said.

Guntur Melati Type A Terminal was rehabilitated in 2020 with a budget of Rp20 billion. Spanning 12,360 square meters, the terminal has the capacity to accommodate an average of 216,327 people and 18,635 buses on a monthly basis.

To encourage citizens to utilise mass transportation like buses, Guntur Melati Terminal has implemented various innovative measures. These include hosting live music performances on specific days, offering martial arts classes for children, organising Garut-signature culinary bazaars, and conducting educational sessions for children on public transportation and traffic safety

In the effort to meet the needs of vulnerable groups, Guntur Melati Terminal offers a range of facilities. These include special parking areas, guiding blocks, wheelchairs, crutches, priority seats, ramps, special lockers, hearing aids and walking sticks, designated playing areas for children, handles, special toilets, and lactation rooms.

“Garut now has a clean and excellent terminal. Please maintain what has been achieved,”

Besides the terminal, another location visited by the Transportation Minister is Garut Railway Station. The Transportation Minister appreciates Garut Station that officially operated on 24 March 2022, which was reactivated in 2019.
