Denpasar — The airport in North Bali, located in Buleleng Regency, Bali, is targeted to be operational in 2025 after the Ministry of Transportation issued a permit for location determination this year.

Bali Governor I Wayan Koster elaborated that after the permit for location determination (penlok) comes out in 2019, then the construction will begin in 2020. Tt will take at least 4 years to complete the construction, which will then begin operation in 2025.

Meanwhile, the construction of North Bali Airport uses a public-private partnership scheme (PPP). In fact, the construction of this airport is predicted and claimed to be better than I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar.

He is optimistic that this airport will be better than Ngurah Rai Airport due to wider land use. Ngurah Rai Airport has an area of less than 300 hectares. Meanwhile, North Bali Airport will later have an area of 442 hectares.

"This airport will truly become an Indonesian icon and an icon of Bali as a world destination, complete with Balinese cultural architecture," he said recently.

Previously, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi had come directly to Buleleng accompanied by Bali Governor I Wayan Koster to conduct a site visit on Sunday (12/30/2018).

The Minister of Transportation said the Kubutambahan village area in Buleleng is the most strategic place for the construction of the new airport in the north of Bali. Although there are currently other alternative locations for the construction of North Bali Airport, namely in Gerogak Village and Celukan Bawang Village.

The land to be used for the construction of the airport in Kubutambahan Village belongs to a traditional village. There isn’t any house in the location, so there will be zero relocation activity.

"The problem due to mountainous terrain is part of technical work. This is a cut-and-fill issue, and we don’t need to bring land from outside. It is also one thing that eases us,” he said.

According to him, the location determination will be issued this year. The airport construction bidding or tender process will also be carried out transparently. Then, the tender process will begin this year after further study.

"In the tender we are trying to be as transparent as possible on who is the most competent, efficient. In that one bidding contest we will discuss with the Governor [on the criteria]," he said.

Previously, Director of Airport in the Ministry of Transportation Mohamad Pramintohadi Sukarno said that the airport in North Bali can improve the reliability of air transportation services in Bali. In addition, it also supports regional development in North Bali and accommodates the growth of tourism activities and the economy in Bali, especially Buleleng.
