Bisnis, Jakarta – The Ministry of Transportation is directing Makassar New Port in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, to become a new export hub alongside Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta and Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya.
Antoni Arif Priadi, the Director General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), stated that this initiative aims to increase efficiency and reduce logistics costs for international shipping.
"We are formulating policies to make Makassar [New Port] a new export hub, in addition to Tanjung Priok and Surabaya. This way, logistics costs from eastern Indonesia will be cheaper, as shipments will not need to go to Java Island first but can go directly from Makassar to countries like China, Japan, Korea, and others," he said in Jakarta on Wednesday (30/4).
Currently, the capacity of Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta and Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya is larger than Makassar New Port, due to the significant economic growth in the western part of Indonesia.
In Makassar, the capacity of Makassar New Port reaches 2 million TEUs, but it is currently only utilised around 300,000 TEUs. "So, there is still a lot of room," he explained. Prasetyo, the Strategy Director at PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), added that Makassar New Port will be close to special economic zones (KEKs) in eastern Indonesia, making it easier to export natural resources to various countries.
"Several developments are planned, such as the KEK in Merauke, industrial estates in Papua, and other developments in the eastern region," said Prasetyo.
Makassar New Port in Makassar City was inaugurated by the 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, early last year.
The construction of Makassar New Port, which cost an investment of Rp5.4 trillion, is expected to increase efficiency in logistics costs across the country.
Regarding its capacity, Makassar New Port can handle up to 2.5 million TEUs per year, making it competitive with major ports in other countries.
