The Future Cities Programme team from the British Embassy in Indonesia is exploring potential collaboration for sustainable infrastructure development in Riau, specifically through the Future Cities Infrastructure Programme (FCIP).

During an audience with Riau Governor Abdul Wahid at the Governor’s Office in Pekanbaru on Monday, Deputy for Low Carbon Infrastructure at the British Embassy, Harriet Cooney, outlined that the FCIP is a central component of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)’s sustainable infrastructure platform.

The programme is designed to support Indonesian cities in building and managing more environmentally friendly infrastructure. Its mission is to assist the Indonesian government in achieving climate adaptation and mitigation targets.

"One way we do this is by providing support for the preparation of green projects while exploring financing options that can accelerate the development of sustainable urban infrastructure," she stated.

As a tangible form of support, the FCIP offers two main approaches. The first involves direct guidance for projects across various sectors with potential to accelerate green infrastructure financing.

The second focuses on training and capacity-building for local governments, enabling them to better understand climate finance mechanisms and independently access sustainable funding sources.

"The FCIP provides comprehensive technical assistance for capacity-building, tailored to the specific needs of each project. Our three key sectors are public transportation, waste management, and flood resilience," Harriet explained.

Echoing this, Riau Governor Abdul Wahid reaffirmed the province’s strong commitment to environmental preservation. He emphasised that safeguarding natural ecosystems is vital to ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

"This year, various initiatives have been undertaken, including wildfire prevention efforts through activities such as jamborees, the Karhutla Run, and direct community outreach programmes," he stated.
