Investor Daily - Pertamina operasikan PLTS atap 2,5 MWp

By Ichsan Amin
Jakarta, ID – PT Pertamina is advancing energy transition through the synergy between PT Kilang Pertamina International (KPI) and PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (NRE). These two entities have inaugurated the largest rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) within Pertamina Group’s operational environment. The PLTS, with a capacity of 2.5 megawatt-peak (MWp), has officially commenced operations at the workshop area and the New HSSE building of KPI’s Balikpapan refinery (19/5/2025).
KPI’s Operations Director, Didik Bahagia, stated that the rooftop PLTS is a tangible proof of synergy and collaboration, contributing significant and mutually beneficial outcomes for both parties.
"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), we have officially inaugurated this rooftop PLTS. We must continue strengthening synergy and collaboration, as when all parties engage in this effort, the real impact of each step will become increasingly evident," Didik said in his statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (20/5/2025).
The PLTS is installed atop three main buildings at KPI’s Balikpapan refinery: the warehouse (1,635 kilowatt-peak/kWp), the workshop (744 kWp), and the New HSSE building (138 kWp). With a total installed capacity of 2.5 MWp, it stands as the largest rooftop PLTS ever built within Pertamina’s refinery operations, capable of reducing emissions by 3,798 tonnes of CO₂e annually.
Didik further emphasised that energy efficiency is crucial in sustaining refinery operations. Currently, energy costs rank as the second-largest expenditure at the refinery, accounting for approximately 4 to 5% of total operational costs.
"By implementing efficiency measures and optimising energy use, we are not only reducing carbon emissions but also gradually lowering energy costs," he added.
In addition to the Balikpapan refinery, PLTS installations have also been deployed at other refineries, including Dumai (3.77 MWp), Plaju (2.25 MWp), Cilacap (2.34 MWp), and Balongan (1.51 MWp). With the Balikpapan refinery’s rooftop PLTS now operational, the total PLTS capacity managed by Pertamina NRE in KPI refineries has reached 12.37 MWp.
This PLTS also integrates the latest technology, leveraging artificial intelligence and an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system, enabling remote monitoring and control in its operations.
At the same event, Pertamina NRE’s Director of Projects & Operations, Norman Ginting, highlighted the strong synergy between KPI and Pertamina NRE, with both entities having collaborated on PLTS installations across nearly all refineries operated by KPI.
"The synergy between KPI and Pertamina NRE aligns with Pertamina’s dual-growth strategy, where KPI plays a strategic role in optimising Pertamina’s core business in oil and gas, while Pertamina NRE supports emission reduction efforts through the provision of green energy," Norman explained.
Beyond PLTS initiatives, KPI and Pertamina NRE have also collaborated on flare gas-to-power projects. This initiative enhances efficiency and reduces emissions in line with the net-zero emission aspiration by converting waste gas from refinery operations into electricity for refinery use.
