Bisnis, Pekanbaru – Riau Province and Malacca in Malaysia are reopening the discussion on the continuity of the Dumai-Malacca RORO (roll-on/roll-off) international ferry project.

The discussion was held during the meeting between Riau Governor Syamsuar and Malacca Minister of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture Datuk Muhammad Jailani bin Khamis.

“We are proposing to continue the construction of Dumai-Malacca RORO project with support from Malacca as the government of Indonesia has a strong commitment to construct the RORO project from Dumai to Malacca,” he stated on Monday.

According to him, the construction of Dumai-Malacca RORO project has to be proposed again as enthusiasm from the people is quite high. Indonesia, especially Riau, continues to wait for the construction of the supporting infrastructure in Malacca to be completed as soon as possible.

From the meeting, it was discovered that Malacca is committed to participate in the construction of the Dumai-Malacca RORO project, so construction in Dumai will also be continued by Riau Provincial Government.

Besides boosting the completion of the Dumai-Malacca RORO project, Riau Provincial Government is asking for support to hold the international bicycle racing event Tour de Siak to extend the route to Malacca in Malaysia.

Minister of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture of Malacca Datuk Muhammad Jailani bin Khamis explained that the interest of Malaysian citizens to visit Riau continued to increase.

“175 Indonesian citizens enter Malacca, and we return the favour with 250 Malaysian entering Dumai,” he stated.

According to him, the Dumai-Malacca ferry schedule has been increased from one trip per day to two trips per day (round trip).

However, the service is only available for three days a week, but it is expected to be provided every day.

“So, this shows that transportation between the two countries is improving. Inshallah (God-willing), next week, one ferry can travel once a day from Malacca to Dumai and from Dumai to Malacca,” he stated.

The Dumai Transportation Department continues to prepare the land side of Bandar Sri Junjungan RORO Port, and the Dumai-Malacca RORO operational preparation team has also been established. As the department is responsible for the land side, they have prepared several facilities and infrastructure, including waiting rooms, offices, toilets, as well as musallas (praying rooms), and other facilities, but they must still be organised.
