Building bridges that build belonging

Jason Walkes, Tax Advisory and Compliance Services, Experienced Associate, PwC Barbados

Jason is a gifted connector. At PwC Barbados, Jason looks for ways to make personal connections that further the sense of inclusion and understanding between different departments.

Jason has been at PwC Barbados since 2019. After working at a bank, he saw an opportunity to get his foot in the door at PwC through the tax filing department, and found his family on the Tax team. Jason’s group is on the smaller side, leading to a close-knit atmosphere. As part of the team, he feels welcomed with open arms, accepted for who he is and encouraged to be an individual who contributes to the team in his own way. Whether it’s having an expressive style, playing competitive basketball or pursuing his passion for DJing, he knows his team supports him. The inclusive culture of his team, or in Jason’s words -- his “second family,” has empowered him to thrive in his personal and professional endeavours and extend a sense of belonging to others.

“My team lets me be an individual. They have been welcoming and have accepted me for who I am. I like to live a life outside of PwC and they actually encourage that.”

Beyond his team, Jason noticed that the groups in his office felt disconnected from one another and did not interact much. Jason made it his mission to bridge the gap and generate a sense of integration and connectedness between teams and departments. One way he brings this to life when working from the office, is to rotate where he sits. For example, rather than always sit with his Tax team, he will make an effort to go and work with the Audit team on another floor. This simple act has given the teams a better understanding of what each other are working on and an opportunity to build closer personal relationships. This improved sense of familiarity has made working together easier and has increased efficiency, enabled interdepartment discussion and fostered a sense of inclusion.

Jason brings life and soul to his team -- and others -- at PwC Barbados. He is helping to build a culture of inclusion and belonging by bringing together the people in this office and contributing to an environment where everyone can thrive. He continues to focus on growing his career at PwC Barbados and has aspirations to undertake an international assignment and take back the learnings from other cultures to his local teams to continue to build and strengthen the culture. When not building connections at PwC Jason spends his time playing basketball competitively and is also a DJ.
