Preparing the next generation with the knowledge and ability to keep themselves safe online

Cybersecurity education for kids

Many territory offices across the CEE region together with local non-governmental organisations (NGO) and schools, are collaborating to increase awareness among school children on how to stay safe in the online world.

Situation

Greater access to digital platforms = greater risk to online threats
#itstime

The online world offers unlimited possibilities but also dangers like harassment, phishing and fraud. It is especially important that young people, who are increasingly active online and often on unfamiliar platforms, are equipped with the necessary skills for safe internet use.

Experience

Delivering workshops that help students better understand their digital footprint and online risks #bethesolution

Built on the success of the initial programme started by PwC Romania in 2019 together with a local NGO, PwC Hungary, PwC Kazakhstan, PwC Czech Republic and PwC Bulgaria collaborated and developed classroom learning with the aim of building students’ awareness and helping them more safely navigate the online world. In 2023 PwC Bosnia and Herzegovina, PwC Albania and PwC Kosovo launched cyber security classes to elementary school children. The goal is to enhance students’ awareness and help them navigate the online world more safely.

The workshops are designed to be adaptable, taking into account the overall understanding and age of the students in each classroom. There are instances where the students take the lead in discussions, fostering an environment that encourages engagement, sharing of personal experiences, and self-directed learning on the topic of cybersecurity.

The workshops delve into the advantages and disadvantages of technology and the digital realm, with a particular focus on cybersecurity. They cover the fundamentals of a personal cyber attack, including preventative measures. The concept of a digital footprint is elucidated, along with its potential implications for future employment opportunities. The workshops also address the issue of cyberbullying and emphasize the importance of being a responsible digital citizen.

“The cybersecurity training took place online in my 12 year old son's class. On this occasion, the children were able to learn about the potential dangers and opportunities of the Internet, and the trainer also illustrated with examples what steps they can take to move more comfortably in the online space.”

Impact

Preparing the next generation with the knowledge and ability to keep themselves safe online #togetherwesolve

The programme has expanded since its launch by PwC Romania in October 2019 and has reached:

  • Five Schools across Romania
  • Three Schools in Hungary
  • Around 130 individuals reached

PwC professionals continue to engage in virtual training sessions to ensure the continuity of education and learning.

“In today’s technology-driven world, children become active users of cyberspace long before they are prepared for it. Very often, not even parents are aware of how much time they spend there on average, which is why they cannot inform them about relevant threats. Therefore, it is especially important to educate children between 10 and 14 on basic internet and cybersecurity issues.”
