Siemens Energy, a global leader in energy technology with more than 100,000 employees across 90+ countries, established a global tax function to support its operations. To achieve this, the group adopted a strategic approach that balanced strong internal tax expertise with carefully selected external support, ensuring agility, compliance, and value creation across diverse markets.
“Siemens Energy had built a global tax function and aimed to strike the right balance between internal expertise and external support. That’s why we collaborated with PwC, combining their local presence with the strength of their international capabilities.”
Máximo Spinedi,Vice President, Global Tax Regions, Siemens EnergyWith nearly 300 entities worldwide, Siemens Energy needed a model that would bring clarity, consistency and immediate insight across jurisdictions, while remaining flexible to changes in the organisation and its governance structure.
The journey towards transformation began with a shared ambition. Siemens Energy and PwC found common ground in their vision for a connected, resilient tax function, one that could keep pace with the company’s global scale and complexity.
The transformation began with a clear and practical goal: create a unified compliance model capable of serving nearly 300 entities across 90+ jurisdictions without disrupting business‑critical processes. To deliver this at scale, PwC mobilised a multi‑territory delivery team spanning Germany and Spain, bringing both deep local knowledge and coordinated global governance.
At the core of the rollout were PwC’s cross‑border transition managers, who applied a proven transition methodology to migrate Siemens Energy’s portfolio into PwC’s managed services Connected Tax Compliance model. This included mapping legacy workflows, identifying critical data owners, aligning entity‑level timelines, and establishing standardised processes that could be deployed consistently across countries, ensuring the global transition kept pace while maintaining a stable compliance cadence.
A central Client Relationship Management (CRM) team, led by PwC Germany with support from PwC Spain, acted as the single coordinating hub, managing governance changes, aligning territory leads, and ensuring that communication remained streamlined.
Together, Siemens Energy and PwC co‑developed a technology roadmap, which assessed in‑house capabilities alongside PwC Sightline, an AI powered tax technology platform that standardises workflows, embeds robust controls and audit trails, and provides real-time visibility for both Siemens Energy and PwC teams. This allowed Siemens Energy to replace manual reconciliations, introduce digital audit trails, and create connected data flows between global markets and tax teams. Demonstrating this alternative “future‑state” model early in the journey helped build confidence in the shift to a more modern, scalable operating approach.
“PwC’s Sightline platform not only standardises workflows across geographies, but also embeds robust controls and audit trails, helping Siemens Energy build trust in their compliance data.”
Mathias Schreiber,Lead Engagement Partner, PwC GermanyBeyond technology, the working relationship was built on trust and transparency. PwC’s Connected Tax Compliance approach brought together advanced technology, robust data and global expertise to create an integrated, end-to-end experience.
“What truly sets PwC’s Connected Tax Compliance apart is the way we bring together advanced technology, robust data, and the expertise of our people into a seamless, end-to-end experience.”
Stan Berings,EMEA Connected Tax Compliance Leader, PwC NetherlandsAs the approach matured, the collaboration naturally broadened into specialised areas of tax.
“When we started working together with PwC, the scope of the services included mainly tax compliance services. This relationship then evolved into a more strategic partnership also covering transfer pricing services, tax litigation services, and M&A tax advisory.”
Máximo Spinedi,Vice President, Global Tax Regions, Siemens EnergyOur Connected Tax Compliance model enabled Siemens Energy to enhance its global compliance operations while strengthening alignment, transparency and efficiency across jurisdictions. This reflects PwC’s wider Managed Services portfolio, where critical operations are delivered through scalable, technology‑enabled services that combine technology, expertise, robust governance and consistent execution.
Siemens Energy gained clearer, real-time visibility across its global compliance activities through PwC Sightline’s reporting environment. By creating a unified view of progress and status across nearly 300 entities in 90+ countries, Siemens Energy was able to monitor workflows more consistently and build greater trust in the underlying data without altering how its tax responsibilities are distributed across markets.
The use of PwC’s cross border transition managers and globally standardised process templates supported smoother onboarding and higher process stability across jurisdictions. Automated audit trails, enhanced data extraction routines and connected workflows helped reduce manual effort and limit time spent reconciling local variations, enabling Siemens Energy to focus more time on higher value activities while maintaining quality.
The collaboration naturally evolved beyond compliance delivery into a wider strategic partnership. With PwC Germany and Spain leading the engagement, Siemens Energy expanded the scope to include transfer pricing, tax litigation and M&A advisory — supported by PwC’s global network and consistent delivery model.
PwC’s Connected Tax Compliance approach has positioned Siemens Energy to respond confidently to evolving global requirements, including broader governance expectations. The strengthened model provides a stable foundation for Siemens Energy as it continues to adapt its tax operations to meet future regulatory demands.
“Our approach goes far beyond simple compliance requirements by focusing on innovative strategies and forward-thinking processes. Throughout periods of change, PwC provides unwavering support, driving continuous innovation, and bringing fresh perspectives to benefit Siemens Energy.”
