Many IT workloads already in the cloud

Data storage and retrieval is currently—and will continue to be—the most popular IT task relegated to private or public cloud computing, but a majority of organizations will also shift relatively large amounts of transaction processing, analytics and web services workloads to either public or private clouds by 2014, according to the 489 respondents to the PwC IT Outsourcing and Cloud Computing Survey. However, the shift will be gradual and selective, say industry vendors. “I don’t see cloud as a fork-lift proposition,” says an executive of a large infrastructure-as-a-services provider.

“Customers don’t just decide to move to the cloud all at once. It’s in phases, gradually, and each event may be for a slightly different reason.”
