Finding balance as a working parent

Meet Marc Dib

Moving from Beirut to Abu Dhabi with his family wasn’t the easiest feat for Marc, but the firm has always supported him in creating a work-life balance. This is the story of a star lawyer who is paving the way for greater career achievements.

Tell us more about your role

I have been working with the firm for four great years now, starting off in our Beirut office and later moving to Abu Dhabi, UAE. I am part of the Contract Review Team within OGC (our internal Legal department). I started off working on general legal support, before helping in structuring the team, installing processes and assisting in the recruitment and onboarding of other lawyers. I am responsible for assisting engagement teams in their daily legal queries, making sure that the firm is in the best legal position in all ongoing projects and that related risks are mitigated as necessary.

With the advancement and changes in the legal landscape, it’s critical that we remain up to date. Before COVID-19 started, the firm had already pushed for more digitalisation, and as OGC, we had started looking at digital tools that could help make our work more efficient. Since day one, I have been very interested in learning more about digital and tech solutions, and always look for more opportunities to grow my tech-experience.

How do you feel your role evolved with time in the firm?

As I work closely with colleagues in the firm, I find myself naturally advancing at different levels. I get to learn and discover new areas of the law field, to assist on new projects, work on making processes more efficient and to use digital resources regularly.

What is the most important lesson that you learned?

The two main and most important lessons I have learned are:

  1. To be patient and resilient, since things can be tough and can take time, but with the right attitude, you can achieve your goals.

  2. The importance of mental health and having a balanced life, since I feel more productive and creative when I am doing well mentally.

You’re saying that balanced living is a top priority for you, how has the firm supported you with creating a work-life balance?

Being a father of two children, and with the work schedule we have, it is sometimes difficult for me to manage my time between the two most important things in my life - my work and my family. Thanks to the flexible working model that the firm has in place, I have managed to spend time with my children while continuing to be fully productive and dedicated to my work. Other than that, the culture within PwC Middle East, whereby colleagues support each other, especially when it comes to family related matters, helped me find the right balance in my life.

It’s not to say that I’m always perfect, but the firm has definitely made creating a balance easier for me. As my wife and I were considering the move with the firm from Beirut to Abu Dhabi, focus on our family’s well being was critical for us; we received the necessary and needed support to make this decision and settle-in smoothly.
