Meshari Alghamdi – What’s it like to lead in a complex, fast-moving field like tax?

1. Let’s start with a throwback. What inspired you to pursue a career in tax and Zakat advisory, and what keeps you motivated in this space eight years in?

My journey into tax and Zakat advisory began during my Co-op training at PwC, where I was drawn to the complexity and impact of this field. Over the past eight years, the dynamic nature of tax regulations in the Kingdom and the opportunity to support clients in navigating these changes with confidence is what keeps me motivated to move forward with my career.

Every case presents a new challenge, and I find great purpose in helping businesses remain compliant while contributing to the broader economic vision of Saudi Arabia.

2. You recently completed the FY25 Tamakkan Programme. What’s one thing you learned that really changed your mindset?

The Tamakkan Programme was a transformative experience. One of the most powerful mindset shifts for me came from the “Inspire Others” and “Empower the Team” modules. I realized that leadership is not just about delivering results—it’s about creating an environment where others can thrive.

The program helped me develop stronger decision-making skills, enhance my strategic thinking, and improve how I communicate and connect with my team. It also taught me how to lead change with agility and purpose, especially through the simulation module, which challenged me to navigate resistance and drive impact. These lessons have reshaped how I lead and how I see my role in shaping the future of our firm.

3. Tax litigation isn’t easy. How do you mentally get ready before representing a client in court or with Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority?

Preparation is key. I approach each case with a deep understanding of the technical details, but I also take time to centre myself mentally. I remind myself that I’m not just representing a client—I’m advocating for fairness and clarity in the system. That sense of responsibility keeps me focused and composed.

4. As a Manager now, what’s one lesson you’ve learned about leading others that you wish you knew earlier?

I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about asking the right questions and empowering others to find solutions. Earlier in my career, I thought I needed to solve everything myself. Now, I see the value in trust, delegation, and creating space for others to grow.

5. What’s one myth about working in tax that you like to change when speaking with university students or new joiners?

Many people think tax is just about numbers and forms. In reality, it’s a strategic, people-driven field that requires critical thinking, communication, and adaptability. I always tell new joiners and university students: if you enjoy solving puzzles and making an impact, tax can be a very rewarding path.

6. What’s one moment in your PwC journey that made you feel really proud and sure you're on the right path?

Being promoted to Manager was a proud milestone, but what made it truly meaningful was the recognition from my mentors and peers. It affirmed that the effort I’ve put into developing myself and supporting others is making a difference—and that I’m on the right path toward becoming a future leader.

7. Switching gears. When you're not drafting appeals or mentoring your team, how do you unwind or recharge?

I truly enjoy spending quality time with my wife and son, especially when we’re exploring new and exciting destinations around the world. Travel helps me reset and gain fresh perspective. I also stay active through sports like equestrianism, soccer and padel—they keep me energized and focused. And when I need a moment of calm, I turn to meditation, whether it’s on the beach or in the peaceful expanse of the desert. Stepping away from work in these ways allows me to return with renewed clarity and motivation.

8. How do you stay motivated to pursue your passions outside of work?

Staying motivated to pursue passions outside of work involves being intentional and self-aware, regularly reminding oneself of the joy and fulfilment these activities provide. Setting small, achievable goals and celebrating progress helps sustain enthusiasm, while connecting with like-minded communities offers encouragement and inspiration.
