Dubai Reef: A global landmark in marine conservation

PwC Middle East supports Dubai Reef

PwC Middle East is proud to partner with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) to support the Dubai Reef initiative, a landmark environmental programme that will bring to life one of the largest purpose-built reefs in the world.

Marine ecosystems face increasing pressure across the globe, with corals, sea grass, as well as the species they support in increasing danger. Purpose-built reefs offer a unique opportunity to Governments and conservationists to restore biodiversity, bolster ecosystem resilience, and support coastal communities.

As a trailblazer in this novel domain, Dubai Reef will deploy 20,000 reef modules across Dubai’s waters by 2027, supported by a bouquet of restoration and conservation initiatives. Success does not come easy: it depends on a perfect balance between module deployment, coral regeneration, and then protection and sustainable use of the Dubai Reef.

Our shared goal

Ever passionate to support the world’s visionaries, we are proud to work with DET for achieving a new milestone in global marine conservation: Dubai Reef.

As a delivery partner, PwC Middle East through Strategy&’s nature team supported DET in setting the overarching plan and roadmap for the success of Dubai Reef. Together we:

  • Assessed the reef’s conservation needs, aiming to allow nature to fully integrate the reef in Dubai’s ecosystem

  • Designed a governance model bringing together government stakeholders, financing partners, conservation organisations, and other key players to enable the Reef’s success

  • Developed an integrated roadmap that translates Dubai Reef’s vision into actionable programmes, milestones, and delivery enablers.

We firmly believe that collaboration between the public and private sectors is the way to accelerate climate action and environmental restoration – and we are proud to walk the talk.

Creating meaningful impact

The Dubai Reef initiative is a powerful example of how partnerships can drive real change. This effort contributes directly to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 vision and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, most notably:

  • SDG 13: Climate Action

  • SDG 14: Life Below Water

  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

“At PwC, we believe in collective action for a more sustainable world. Partnering with Dubai DET on the Dubai Reef initiative is an opportunity to contribute our skills and passion to protect marine ecosystems and inspire others to do the same.”
