Derek Smith

Derek is a Tax Partner at PwC Canada. Over the past 11 years, Derek was responsible for the corporate tax function and international tax strategy for a large publicly traded energy and services company with investments in fully integrated electricity and gas systems. Providing leadership to a high-performing team, ensuring compliance with domestic and international tax filing requirements, financial reporting obligations, and regulatory responsibilities.

Working closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors, Derek delivered strategic tax advice and oversight across a broad range of growth and diversification initiatives in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. He oversaw the development, deployment and maintenance of various domestic and international tax efficient financing structures and effectively managed the relationship with tax authorities, including successfully presenting and defending multiple tax filing positions.

With a focus on leveraging technology to achieve efficiency and collaboration, he oversaw the implementation of a digital tax operations solution that enabled automated workflow management and effective document storage. Further, he championed the design, testing and deployment plan for an automated tax provision software initiative.

Derek spent the first 13 years of his professional accounting career providing assurance services and tax advice to a variety of clients across various industries as a member of a large professional services firm.

Derek has coached at various levels of minor hockey and was previously a member of the board of a local minor hockey association.
