On Saturday, June 16, PwC’s group of athletes joined nearly 200 other participants and 85 volunteers in the race to beat cancer in the name of Joe's Team. Together, expending over 5,200km of physical exertion by the way of swim, bike and run, Joe’s Team Calgary raised more than $175,000 for cancer research at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. PwC sponsored the event in cooperation with the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. The race, held in Elbow Valley, allowed participants to take part as individuals or relay teams in either a sprint triathlon (750 m swim, 20 km bike ride, 5 km run) or a duathlon (5 km run, 20 km bike ride, 2.5 km run).
I want to pass on my sincere thanks and hearty congratulations to everyone who took part in the 2012 PwC Calgary Joe’s Team event. We had a fantastic day with a great race and amazing turnout. Together, the cancer research dollars that we helped to raise will directly benefit the Alberta Cancer Foundation head and neck cancer research project collaboration between the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the University of Calgary. I want to thank our PwC triathlon participants:
Special recognition goes to Michel Grillot and Andrew McColl, who placed in their age groups, and to Lachlan Griffiths, who completed the triathlon after less than 2 weeks of training. He’s shown us that there are truly no excuses when taking part — so if you’re considering joining us next year, just take the leap.
A good number of people volunteered their time leading up to and on the day of the event to make our participation possible: Cynthia Kumar, Sarah Morrison, Beatriz Espinoza, Darshni Pillay, Lisa Lam, Melisa Findlay, Sharath Peddada and Heidi MacKenzie, who organized our popular red t-shirts. Thanks to all of you for your efforts to make this another exciting and successful year.
The PwC team of friends and family made up the largest single group of athletes and volunteers, which was an impressive turnout and something I'm sure Joe would have been proud of! The support and energy of our group was one the factors that made the 2012 event not only fun but a great success for PwC Calgary.
A heartfelt thanks to Melisa Findlay, Justin Abel, Diane Horton, Tony Balasubramanian, Matthew Wetmore, Duncan Nicholas, Michel Grillot and Brian McLean, for your kind contributions to the silent auction fundraiser.
I also want to thank our City Leader, Cal Jacober; our Managing Partner, Western Canada, Ray Crossley; our Calgary partners; and all employees who offered their support, cheered us on, and donated to this worthy cause.
This year, the PwC Calgary team raised more than $12,000 and it’s all thanks to your individual contributions of time, money and team spirit.
We will be running the event again next year and I believe that we can achieve a team of least 50 people — with 10 people from every line of service, along with 5 of our clients — to help PwC Calgary’s 2013 Joe’s Team raise more than $25,000 altogether. We’ve already received inquiries from enthusiastic participants looking to join us next year, so if you’re interested in taking part, please contact myself or Heidi MacKenzie, as we’ll be kicking off our planning for next year in September 2012.
Once again, thank you so much to everyone who supported us, cheered with us and ran with us this year!
Joe Finley — a PwC alumnus — began a difficult fight with cancer in 2004 and, in late 2010, lost his 6 year battle. Despite the physical and emotional toll of this long and extremely aggressive cancer treatment, Joe fulfilled a life-long goal when he completed his first triathlon in August 2006. To help others “…feel the way I felt when I crossed the finish line of my first triathlon,” Joe created Joe’s Team, an innovative fundraising initiative that has raised more than $5 million dollars over the past 5 years.
