Why representation matters: Philip on mentorship and belonging

Philip IIekendi

Philip Ilekendi, Proposal Manager, National Pursuits, PwC Canada

“My journey at PwC Canada has shown me how representation, mentorship, and community can transform an uncertain newcomer into a confident leader committed to lifting others along the way.”

My journey at PwC Canada began just over three years ago. I was excited but uncertain, determined to learn and grow. This is appropriate, since running and travelling have always been passions of mine.

Joining the Black Professionals Inclusion Network (BPIN) quickly became a highlight. I was fortunate to have mentors—some who looked like me and others who simply believed in me—who encouraged me to lift as I climb. Now, I mentor junior colleagues through BPIN’s mentorship initiative, celebrating wins together and supporting each other through challenges. These relationships have taught me how powerful representation and mentorship can be.

From helping organize our inaugural African culture event to leading a food drive for the Calgary Food Bank with the corporate and social responsibility team, my experiences as the BPIN engagement and events lead for PwC Calgary have filled me with pride and purpose. And they reflect our PwC Canada value of CARE in action.

Witnessing Mohamed Kande become PwC’s first Black Global Chairman was a defining moment that mattered to me. It reminded me why representation matters, and it inspires me to keep pushing forward and building on the legacy of those who came before.

Sharing my story during Black History Month, I feel humbled by the support of this community and hopeful for the next generation of Black professionals. Representation, mentorship, and community have transformed me from an unsure newcomer into a confident leader proud of my heritage.

My journey is ongoing, but I don’t walk it alone. Colleagues have become friends and mentors, making PwC Canada feel like a second home. As I look ahead, I’m committed to paying it forward—supporting others, building connections, and honouring those who have paved the way.
