Project Management Professional (PMP)®

PMP® credential is the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMP® demonstrates that you have the experience, education and competency to lead and direct projects and bring projects to successful completion.

Who should apply?

PMP recognizes demonstrated competence in leading and directing project teams. If you’re an experienced project manager looking to solidify your skills, stand out to employers and maximize your earning potential, the PMP credential is the right choice for you.

PMP Eligibility Overview

To apply for the PMP, you need to have either:

  • A four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

OR

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or the global equivalent) with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

The PMP® and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® qualifications are based on the same syllabus, which is the Project Management Institute, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - Fifth Edition, Project Management Institute, Inc., 2013. Hence, the knowledge base for both the credentials is the same. However, the CAPM® certification exam is structured as an entry level exam for PMP®.

The PMP exam is based on the PMP Examination Specification, which describes tasks out of five performance domains:

  1. Initiating the project
  2. Planning the project
  3. Executing the project
  4. Monitoring and controlling the project
  5. Closing the project

The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions written against this specification.

Mapped to these five process groups are ten project management Knowledge Areas:

  • Project Integration Management
  • Project Scope Management
  • Project Time Management
  • Project Cost Management
  • Project Quality Management
  • Project Human Resource Management
  • Project Communications Management
  • Project Risk Management
  • Project Procurement Management
  • Project Stakeholder Management
