Investments, markets, and asset valuation

Investment decision-making requires a solid understanding of how markets function, how prices and returns evolve, and how to reliably estimate the value of assets. This two-day course offers a comprehensive overview of key types of investment instruments, their markets, and the economic relationships that influence them.

You will learn to work with valuation models such as CAPM and multi-factor approaches, grasp the principles of efficient markets, and gain confidence in concepts like arbitrage and hedging. Through practical examples, real-world scenarios, and instruction aligned with the SSA syllabus (Slovak Society of Actuaries—sections 5.1 Investments and Markets and 5.2 Asset Valuation), you will acquire knowledge that can be immediately applied in your professional practice. The SSA syllabi are fully aligned with the requirements of the AAE (Actuarial Association of Europe) and the IAA (International Actuarial Association).

What you will learn:

  • Characteristics of investment assets and markets,
  • Derivative investments and their markets,
  • How economic factors influence prices and returns,
  • Theoretical and historical relationships between returns and economic indicators,
  • Application of the CAPM model to calculate asset returns,
  • Use of multi-factor models to estimate asset performance,
  • Concepts such as efficient market, complete market, arbitrage, and hedging,
  • Risk-neutral valuation and pricing deflator in derivative valuation,
  • Stochastic interest rate models, including their limitations and possible solutions.
