Resource Management

As part of our efforts, we are committed to improve our environmental performance with regards to all types of resources used in the day-to-day running of our operations. Recent initiatives include the following:

  • continuation of our paperless office project, including a reform of our archiving practices and revised internal procedures to significantly cut down on the printing of documents
  • a number of measures to foster the paperless mentality also with our clients for example issuing electronic debtor statements and using double-sided printing for client deliverables
  • introduced electronic payslips in line with the firm’s commitment to significantly reduce paper usage
  • introduced recycling of paper and laptops as two of our main consumables
  • introduced tele-conferencing and online meeting facilities to reduce unnecessary travel
  • extended the use of double-sided printing to include all client deliverables as well as financial statements besides documents for internal use
  • purchase of chlorine free paper
  • giving preference to green procurement in sourcing our consumables. For example, we purchased cold air hair driers as a more energy efficient substitute to paper towels

Internal Awareness Raising Initiatives

The Green Committee undertakes a number of initiatives within the firm to educate our people in order to strengthen their responsible behaviour. These initiatives include simple measures such as: signage near lifts, switches and other areas to constantly encourage energy saving measures. The committee carries out a number of internal surveys to monitor staff’s attitude towards PwC’s environmental initiatives. It also provides regular training to employees on greener working and living practices. The Committee uses Spark, our intranet, to communicate good practices and initiatives.

Energy saving measures

  • Use of energy saving lights throughout most of our premises together with motion sensors that turn off lights when floors and rooms are not in use
  • Installation of a Building Management System to manage and monitor electricity use and control electricity intensity depending on the availability of external light
  • Affixed signage near lifts, switches and other areas to constantly encourage energy saving measures through simple gestures
  • Monthly monitoring of key environmental parameters: electricity, water and paper consumption

New building Measures

In the design and development of our offices in Qormi and in the refurbishment of the other floors, we studied and implemented energy saving solutions:

  • improved distribution and flexibility in controlling air conditioning units to achieve better temperature control, particularly in open areas and taking into consideration the proximity to external windows
  • insulation within the roof lightweight structure which helps to reduce ingress of heat
  • use of glass with thermal insulation properties on all external apertures
  • shading devices on all south and west facing apertures to reduce air conditioning load
  • use of collected rainwater to supply all our restrooms
