The new COVID-19 Wage Supplement Scheme

An opportunity for those establishments that have been ordered to shut down and had not benefited from the wage supplement scheme in 2020.

15 March 2021

One of the new restrictions announced by the Prime Minister, in an attempt to reduce the COVID-19 transmission, is the shutting down of certain establishments with effect from 11 March 2021. The Government has committed that, through the collaboration of Malta Enterprise Corporation (‘the Corporation’), such establishments shall receive the full wage supplement amounting to circa €800 per employee per month.

Establishments that were already receiving this assistance need not re-apply. However businesses, including self-employed, that have been ordered to shut down and that had not benefited from the wage supplement in 2020 will now have the opportunity to apply for the maximum assistance until they remain closed due to the restrictions. The electronic application form, which must be submitted by 23 April 2021, is available on the website of the Corporation and may be accessed through this link.

Current beneficiaries of the wage supplement whose business was not ordered to shut down following the recent restrictions, shall continue to benefit from the reformed wage supplement scheme implemented earlier this year in terms of which the assistance is calculated depending on the loss of revenue over a six month period in 2020 when compared to the same period in 2019.

In the meantime, the Government has also announced the COVID-19 Parent Benefit Scheme which is applicable to parents employed in the private sector and who are unable to telework. Employers whose employees apply for this Scheme may not benefit from the wage supplement for such employees.
