PwC Malta Annual Review 2026

Fabio Axisa

“Throughout the past financial year, we’ve continued to enhance meaningful, clear relationships with our clients and stood shoulder to shoulder with them in a phase of sustained uncertainty, more demanding regulation, and faster pace of technological change. This experience reinforces importance of listening to our clients in a comprehensive and consistent manner, understanding the pressures our clients face, and responding with assurance that’s rigorous, objective, relevant, and built on trust. We’ll build on those foundations by combining profound practical expertise, professional judgement, and emerging technology so that we can continue supporting clients in handling complexity, identifying new opportunities, and moving forward strategically with confidence.”

Fabio Axisa, Head of Assurance

Assurance is central to how we build trust and support confidence in business and society. Businesses operate within a landscape characterised by economic uncertainty, shifting regulations, fast pace of technological change, and multiple risks that are more connected than ever. These pressures test business resilience, affect financial reporting and governance, and influence the decisions our clients make about growth and transformation. At PwC Malta, we invest a significant amount of time in understanding our clients’ specific circumstances and in maintaining open, meaningful, and continuous interaction throughout our relationship.

We work shoulder to shoulder with our clients as they handle immediate priorities and prepare for longer-term change. That means delivering high-quality assurance, offering constructive challenge, and sharing relevant insights, telling our clients things that they don’t know. And we adapt our approach to focus on the risks, opportunities, and expectations that matter most to the respective client’s organisation, so clients can act with confidence and move forward with clarity.

Responding to change through reinvention

We face many of the same forces of change that our clients and the general business community face. During FY26, we continued strengthening the skillset of our people, our infrastructure, and our operational processes so that our assurance practice remained connected to our clients’ needs, technology-enabled, and focused on delivering clear impact. This included continuing to invest in the right talent, improving the conditions for our people to grow and thrive, and equipping our teams with effective tools and infrastructure to execute work in the best manner possible.

Investing in our people and workplace

At PwC Malta, our people remain our strongest differentiator and the most important area of investment. In 2026, we continued recruiting in an active manner with the objective of securing the depth and breadth of skills we require for the future of assurance, whilst maintaining a clear and determined focus on retaining and developing the talented people already within our practice. Attracting and retaining the right expertise is essential to delivering consistently high-quality work, especially as audit and assurance become more data-driven and technology-led.

We’ve also been investing further in the infrastructure that supports our teams. The planned refurbishment of the assurance floor within our offices will create a modern, collaborative environment designed around how our people work, learn, and connect. This investment demonstrates our commitment to enhancing employee experience and to developing a workplace that supports collaboration, wellbeing, and high performance.

Our determined focus on recruitment, development and retention underpins our workforce planning and supports the consistent delivery of high-quality audits. In FY26, we invested 22,540 hours in continuous learning and development, helping our assurance teams remain abreast of the latest technical, digital, and analytical skills.

Technology and the future of audit

PwC’s global assurance transformation programme, brings together people, data, delivery, methodology, and technology to create a more connected, consistent and insight-driven audit experience. It also builds on years of investment across the PwC network, as we continue to develop capabilities that enhance quality, strengthen audit insight and support more effective delivery.

At the centre of this initiative is Maestro, a new AI-native, end-to-end assurance platform that integrates human judgement, advanced technology and AI across the audit process. Designed to mirror how our clients work, it will help teams focus on what matters, surface audit-relevant insights and potential risks earlier, and coordinate more seamlessly. Maestro hence brings together risk assessment, data-driven analysis, and secure communication into a single, integrated experience. Designed around our auditors, Maestro puts AI and advanced analytics at the core of the audit to enhance our testing and analysis, while keeping auditor judgement central to every engagement.  For clients, this can mean fewer duplicate requests, less administrative burden through automated data acquisition, earlier visibility of audit status and earlier questions as procedures are completed quicker, supporting more focused and insightful conversations with their audit teams.

The programme also extends beyond the platform through continued investment in embedding Generative AI in our people’s day-to-day work. AI can help teams analyse information at scale, identify patterns and direct attention to areas requiring further consideration, but it does not replace professional judgement. Our engagement teams remain responsible for audit quality and oversight, evaluating AI-supported outputs and reaching final conclusions in accordance with professional standards.

The future of audit

Quality and confidence

At PwC Malta, quality is the foundation of our Assurance practice and is the metric we utilise to gauge every engagement. During the financial year under review, we strengthened our System of Quality Management, governance, controls framework, and monitoring, as well as the culture and behaviours that underpin consistent, high-quality delivery. Careful engagement acceptance and continuance decisions, access to the right skills and expertise, and confident use of technology-enabled tools all remain central to delivering effective assurance.

Technology helps us identify and respond to engagement risks with greater rigour and precision , but it does not replace accountability, independence, or professional judgement. By combining a disciplined approach to quality management with deep technical expertise and the responsible use of new tools, we continue to deliver assurance that’s reliable, transparent, and relevant for stakeholders.

Evolution of our operational model

Alongside our broader reinvention agenda, our assurance business model will continue evolving. We’re reshaping the manner in which we work with our clients, how our teams collaborate across the practice, and how we connect different experts across the firm. This evolution aims at making it simpler to bring together the right people and capabilities, such that these teams communicate clearly and respond faster, while protecting the independence, rigour, and personal relationships that foster trust.

Looking ahead

The fast pace of change experienced within the marketplace is putting more pressure on organisations to safeguard resilience, adapt fast, and combine technology, expertise, and human judgement in a pragmatic way. Within the firm and the Assurance practice, we focus on converting these academic principles into a clearly defined local practical experience for our clients and for our people. We do this by strengthening relationships, investing for the future, and delivering assurance that helps build confidence and trust.

We are determined to stay focused on reinforcing the foundations that define our practice: quality, integrity, objectivity, and trust. By continuing to invest in our people, our workplace, our technology, and our relationships with our clients, we’ll help clients handle today’s challenges and approach tomorrow’s opportunities with greater confidence and clarity.
