Innovation for Industry (I4I) Scheme

Are you ready to invest in innovation? A new funding opportunity from Xjenza Malta could help transform your ideas into practical industrial improvements. The Innovation for Industry (I4I) scheme supports businesses in Malta, including SMEs and large enterprises, in developing or enhancing products, services, or processes through applied research and development.

This scheme focuses on practical, industry-driven innovation that can be integrated directly into company operations, helping organisations improve productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability while strengthening Malta’s research and innovation ecosystem.

The aim of this scheme is to accelerate the transfer of research and technological knowledge into industry, enabling companies to adopt research-informed solutions that generate measurable technical improvements and commercial impact. Successful applicants may receive funding of up to €150,000 to support the implementation of these innovative projects.

Consider these optional elements for your project:

Industry–academia collaboration: Partner with Maltese Higher Education institutions to leverage specialised research expertise and technical capabilities.

Talent integration top-up: Secure an additional €40,000 to recruit or internally transfer a highly qualified researcher into a dedicated R&D role within your company.

Choose from two state aid frameworks:

Funding can cover up to 75% of eligible project costs. Including the Talent Integration Top-Up can increase aid intensity to 90% for that component.

This option supports industrial research and experimental development activities, starting with a base aid intensity of 25% of eligible project costs.

Additional top-ups based on company size:

  • Small enterprises: +20%

  • Medium enterprises: +10%

A further 15% increase applies for projects involving effective collaboration or wider dissemination of results.

This means total funding can reach up to 60% of eligible project costs, depending on the project structure.

Deadline: The call for proposals is open, with applications closing on 18 May 2026.
