Technology

Malta Annual Review 2018

In PwC’s latest Global CEO Survey, 81% of respondents across all sectors agreed that technological progress is fundamentally changing their organisation and that the pressure to manage disruption in their underlying business model is unrelenting. Within this context, our Digital Consulting practice seamlessly combines strategy, customer experience and technology to enable clients to transform their business and achieve durable growth.

During the 18 month period under review, there has been marked growth and development in each of our four strategic pillars, notably:

  • advising clients on strategy and acquisition in relation to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Industry-specific solutions, coupled with project management office assistance;
  • assisting our clients in securing and protecting information against threats of hacking and misappropriation;
  • offering data analytic solutions to enable client organisations to capitalise on their untapped business intelligence, thereby enabling them to make faster and better decisions, work more efficiently and find new sources of revenue;
  • offering IT managed services thereby enabling clients to benefit from the availability of a team of IT professionals whilst avoiding the burden of maintaining in-house resources.

Besides focusing on the delivery of client engagements, we have also been actively involved in transforming the manner in which we consult with clients. The inauguration of the PwC Hub has facilitated our transition towards engaging clients in design thinking workshops within creative and collaborative spaces. This transformation in the way that we advise our clients, through the active participation of key decision makers and influencers, has been very well received and is delivering results all round.

What we've done

ERP and industry-specific consulting

Within the ERP and industry-specific strategic consulting space, we have been successful in a number of high profile tenders aimed at assisting the public sector in business transformation initiatives. These include areas covering inter alia the tourism sector with the introduction of a digital tourism platform, the health sector with the introduction of a national electronic health records registry and at the National Statistics Office with the replacement of the legacy systems and transformation of business processes.

We have also assisted our private sector client base across a broad range of sectors, including financial services, gaming and manufacturing. Engagements undertaken included assisting a large retail organisation with the development of the IT strategy and the selection of new ERP systems and advising a leading FMCG importer on the replacement of the legacy IT solutions.

Cybersecurity

Besides the number of high-profile Cybersecurity breaches, which regularly feature in the financial news headlines, many local organisations have recently been hit by hacking, phishing or other malware attacks. This has resulted in a greater awareness and increased demand for cybersecurity advisory services. In the period under review, we have performed a number of information security audits for clients, including insurance companies and commercial banks. We also assisted a financial institution in building a cybersecurity framework with mechanisms to manage cyber-risks; monitor multiple risk factors; detect emerging risks; and measure cybersecurity against the corporate risk appetite. In addition, we assisted participants in a simulation of a cyberattack on national critical infrastructure and were engaged to carry out a number of penetration tests and vulnerability assessments on public facing IT systems.

The ever increasing risk awareness was also the key driver behind two assignments that involved the development of comprehensive Business Continuity Plans, one for an iGaming entity with operation centres in Malta and overseas and the other for a leading insurance company. The outcome provided comfort to management that the organisations would continue to operate in spite of adverse incidents.

Data and Analytics

Demand for Data and Analytics services that we launched relatively recently is growing strong. Notable assignments include the work we undertook at a local commercial bank in the validation of IFRS9 Expected Credit Loss (ECL) provisions through the use of data analytics to ensure that the results of the ECL process provided by the implemented system are reasonable when challenged by the off-system re-calculation model. We also assisted clients in leveraging the power of data and analytics to ensure that information generated by certain key processes (e.g. revenue) from their operational systems is accurate and complete.

IT Managed Services

In recent years the PwC team providing IT Managed Services as an outsourced IT Function has grown significantly. These services eliminate many of the issues clients face when having to maintain a fully-fledged team of in-house IT specialists particularly in a market where such skills are in high demand.

In recent years, the majority of projects handled involved migrating systems to the Cloud, typically starting from email and other collaboration tools. Several clients have successfully moved all systems and software off-premises, reducing the cost of administration and maintenance and getting flexibility to scale the IT infrastructure in sync with the business, making IT a variable cost. An added benefit is the facility to have all systems typically available from anywhere, on the road, while travelling abroad or from home for staff that want or need a more flexible schedule.

In the period under review we also helped clients in different sectors through strategy, planning, piloting, migrating, training and deployment to enable a smooth transition from in-house systems to cloud-based services with minimal disruption to their business. As an on-going service, our IT team focuses on the availability of services and particularly network capacity, using automated monitoring and reporting to push the IT infrastructure and systems upkeep to a background activity about which our clients do not need to be as concerned.

Business in Action with Cloud Solutions

In March 2017, the firm delivered the Digital Business Conference with the theme “Business in Action with Cloud Solutions” in collaboration with Microsoft Malta. The purpose of this conference was to bring together business leaders and IT professionals to explore innovative ways of transforming businesses through data analytics and cloud service offerings. Mr Gerard Verweij, the PwC Global Data and Analytics Leader, was a key note speaker at this event.
