Climate Change & Carbon Management

Diversified Multinational

Project description:
Development of a carbon inventory and reduction strategy

Challenge:
The client recognised that operations in high impact industries were especially risky as they were not in a position to estimate potential financial risks under future climate change policies and regulations.

Solution:
Firstly, we developed a baseline greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for the client’s global operations. Following the completion of the carbon baseline inventory, we identified opportunities for carbon reduction. The team developed the business case and implementation roadmaps for various carbon reduction initiatives related to green technologies, energy efficiency, renewable energy and operational improvement.

Results:
We were instrumental in the development of carbon reduction strategy roadmaps and performed the calculations to a set carbon reduction target moving forward through initiatives that not only cut carbon emissions but also costs.

Major Oleochemical Manufacturer

Project description:
Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) support

Challenge:
The client’s buyers had requested it to respond to the CDP supply chain questionnaire. But the client was unsure how to respond as well as the potential implications that responding to the CDP might have on their business.

Solution:
Several workshops were conducted to understand CDP's requirements and to support the client in developing a carbon inventory. This was followed by reviews of the CDP questionnaire. A strategic evaluation was also conducted to look at how the client copes with threats arising from climate change and the potential business implications for responding to the CDP.

Results:
The client obtained a detailed understanding of the CDP, the positive implications for disclosure and tools required to provide a meaningful response to the CDP.

Oil and Gas Company

Project description:
Carbon inventory review

Challenge:
The client needed to enhance their current carbon inventory based on the appropriate standards.

Solution:
The exercise involved a review of its existing carbon inventory, including a benchmarking analysis on its competitors' carbon inventory practices. The organisational and operational boundaries of the inventory were identified. Emission factors for each of the identified emission sources were also provided and were aligned to the industry best practice. We provided recommendations based on the gaps identified through meetings and site visits with the business units.

Results:
A 3-year roadmap was developed to facilitate the enhancement of the organisation's carbon inventory and carbon management strategy. At the end of the engagement, a training workshop was conducted for the employees to help them understand the client's carbon management strategy.

Energy, Utilities and Mining

Project description:
Development and prioritisation of greenhouse gas (GHG) and water abatement opportunities

Challenge:
To respond to the social and environmental impacts of its business, a leading global resources company in Australia recently decided that all its facilities that exceeded specified water consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission thresholds would have to develop cost curves for reductions. As a part of this global initiative, we were engaged to investigate and develop GHG and water abatement cost curves at three mine-site locations.

Solution:
We conducted and facilitated workshops with local operations to identify abatement opportunities, and screened and costed the identified projects. We then modelled the abatement options to derive a cost per unit of GHG and water abated.

Results:
The results of this effort will be used by the client to identify and prioritise cost effective GHG and water abatement opportunities for implementation. It will also help them arrive at a Group level GHG and water reduction target.
