PwC Consulting LLC (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO Susumu Adachi; hereinafter referred to as “PwC Consulting”) announced that it established the e-Sports Business Development Office on November 21, 2018. The business will provide advisory services to companies aiming to enter the e-sports related business, which is attracting attention around the world, in the three fields of business entry, team strengthening and second career.
PwC Consulting will provide support to companies aiming to enter the e-sports business newly in areas from forming internal consensus to formulating revenue models as well as scouting for players and opening of training facilities. It will also provide support in building the governance, risk management and compliance, which are necessary for operating a team and league, as well as in brand building and utilization of social media, both of which are important for an e-sports team.
Factors necessary in measuring the performance of an e-sports player are largely classified into four categories of ability, temperament, condition, and environment, which will then be investigated from various angles leveraging the AI and analytics capabilities of PwC. Support will be provided taking into account factors ranging from the analysis results of each game to action reforms for performance improvement. As for the knowledge gained by analysing the performance of the player and team (factors influencing productivity and organizational communication, etc.), PwC Consulting will provide support also for product development by applying them in other fields.
Similar to other professional sports, e-sports players also face challenges of building a second career. PwC Consulting focused on the similarities in skills and mind-set required for e-sports players and cyber security professionals and will propose a career switch to the security industry to players who retire from the frontline. This could also be a choice that would solve the shortage of security-related human resources, which has become a serious social issue. Specifically, PwC Consulting will provide support to e-sports players by offering training and helping them build their careers. It will also provide support for building a dual career where an active e-sports player builds a career as a cyber security professional as well as for the introduction of a mentor system.
PwC Consulting will build a system composed of more than 10 consultants within a year from now in order to realize these support services, and aims to achieve a net sales of two billion yen within five years.
PwC’s Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2018-2022 forecasts the e-sports market to reach 180 billion yen globally in 2021 and the number of e-sports players to reach 100 million. PwC Consulting aims to contribute to the sound growth of e-sports business in Japan by forming an ecosystem that includes new entry to profit generation as well as to business expansion and support for second career of players in the e-sports-related market, which is expected to expand rapidly.
