Message from the CEO

The role of the corporate tax function in Japan continues to evolve. Focusing solely on compliance and risk management is no longer enough; it is increasingly important for the tax function to enhance corporate value. Tax has a direct impact on financial performance and is closely tied to key management indicators such as earnings per share and return on equity, among others. Tax is also a critical part of other areas of management focus, such as corporate social responsibility and ESG. Consequently, aligning tax strategy with business strategy, maintaining tax transparency and ensuring tax is accountable to all stakeholders are all increasingly important to business.

Because the ability of tax to enhance corporate value hinges on accurate tax data, a clear framework for the collection of tax data both domestically and internationally, as well as the effective use of that data in management decision-making in Japan, is critical. This is especially important given the increasing complexity of both national and supranational tax systems, such as the global minimum tax.

Against this background, PwC Tax Japan is focused on identifying new ways to support the in-house tax function. First, working with the global PwC network through the development of advanced tax technologies, including those utilising generative AI. Second, by providing professional staff with extensive expertise in domestic and international taxation to work on-site with the in-house tax function directly, whether for the short, medium or long term. In this way, issues can be identified and resolved more quickly, while tax operations can be optimised and improved wherever possible.

PwC’s purpose is ‘To build trust in society and solve important problems’. By continuing to integrate technology with our expertise , we aim to transcend the traditional role of a tax advisor and become a true business partner for our clients as they face the current challenges of the global tax environment.
