Since 2016, the PwC Japan Group has held a market dubbed “Tohoku Reconstruction Support Marché,” as part of its initiatives to support reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku region. In this event held at the Tokyo office every March, volunteers from the Group firms sell the products of Tohoku companies PwC Japan supports.
The year 2018 is the halfway point of the five-year Reconstruction and Revitalization Period set by the Japanese government. Therefore, in addition to an annual market, this year we also held a talk session inviting panelists from Iwate, a prefecture in which PwC Japan has provided successive support in such forms as accounting, management, and tax consulting services. The talk session was aimed at considering ways to reinvigorate community through collaboration between corporations and municipalities, in order to clarify what Tohoku will need after the reconstruction phase.

The talk session began with identifying the issues Tohoku faces—recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and Typhoon Lionrock in 2016, as well as the region’s declining population. Taking these issues into account, the panelists discussed the state of rebuilding local businesses, public-private partnerships, and what lies ahead after the reconstruction phase. The session helped increase the audience’s understanding of what can be achieved through collaboration between corporations and the affected areas.
At the Tohoku Reconstruction Support Marché, volunteers from the Group firms sold the products of the companies in Iwate Prefecture that we had supported primarily by providing accounting, management, and tax consulting services.
