Accelerating collaboration within and across companies and industries by strengthening data and architecture, and by creating opportunities to share insights to shape the future of the mobility industry.

Smart Mobility Innovation Hub

The Smart Mobility Innovation Hub was established to accelerate collaboration among stakeholders, shaping mobility ecosystems within and across companies and industries.

By sharing mobility trends and related data, we help stakeholders build a shared understanding. We also provide an in-person community space and create opportunities to co-create new value in the mobility domain.

Background

PwC Consulting estimates that the global mobility market will grow from about JPY1,780tn in 2023 to around JPY2,480tn by 2030.

Of the roughly JPY700tn in projected growth, approximately JPY260tn is expected to come from the smart mobility domain, an area that requires significant transformation. We see this as a critical growth engine for the broader mobility industry.

As competition intensifies in the smart mobility domain, Japanese companies may find that conventional strategies and operating models are no longer sufficient in terms of speed, cost or the value delivered.

We believe the key to creating new value is to connect and leverage assets that are currently fragmented across companies and society, including experience, know-how, talent and data.

Against this backdrop, PwC Consulting believes two capabilities are essential: (1) designing a future-state architecture envisioned by cross-industry and cross-functional professionals, and (2) building an environment where know-how and data can be connected and used effectively and efficiently.

To transform today’s strengths into tomorrow’s value, we launched the Smart Mobility Innovation Hub to enable these outcomes.

Function of the Smart Mobility Innovation Hub

Through the four functions below, the Smart Mobility Innovation Hub accelerates collaboration among stakeholders shaping mobility ecosystems within companies, across companies and across industries.

① Architecture design

Internal and external professionals in the smart mobility domain work across industries, drawing on proven delivery experience and the latest macro trends.

They identify key challenges in the smart mobility domain, define the target future state and organise the stakeholders and data needed to achieve the future vision.

② Community hub

We operate the community hub, an in-person space that supports deeper, more practical architecture design through dialogue with professionals, helping drive shared understanding and real-world adoption.

At the community hub, we host exhibits by leading mobility companies showcasing PwC Japan Group solutions, running workshops and seminars with companies and government agencies, and facilitating networking and matching among key players.

③ Thought leadership and communication

Using the mobility-related data we organise through our architecture work, we curate and share key insights, including macro mobility trends and market outlooks, through web content and seminars.

④ Integrated mobility data platform

To accelerate the transition towards the desired future of smart mobility, we develop and operate a shared data platform.

By integrating and leveraging the data organised through our architecture design work, we help accelerate progress and deliver impact in the smart mobility domain.

Focus areas of the Smart Mobility Innovation Hub

The Smart Mobility Innovation Hub defines four domains that are key to industry transformation and will serve as our core focus for information sharing and communication.

We also analyse related themes, including cross-company and cross-industry collaboration.

  • SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle)
  • MaaS (Mobility as a Service)/autonomous driving
  • CN (Carbon Neutral)/circular/LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)
  • ZEV (Zero-Emission Vehicle)/battery

SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle)

As software makes up a growing share of a vehicle’s value, managing software across the value chain is becoming increasingly important.

We offer comprehensive support for software management across development, manufacturing, the market and in-vehicle domains, including establishing mechanisms for software updates in the market to create new value through software.

MaaS (Mobility as a Service)/autonomous driving

We support companies entering the MaaS business and municipalities considering MaaS as part of smart city development, ranging from MaaS business planning to solving local challenges through integrated smart city MaaS initiatives.

We also provide end-to-end support for the transition to an autonomous driving society, from market entry strategy and business model design to ecosystem development, pilots and service design, operating model and organisation setup, and engineering/design through implementation.

CN (Carbon Neutral)/circular/LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)

For companies working towards carbon neutrality, we provide comprehensive services to support the introduction of LCA and to enhance management practices based on LCA insights.

ZEV (Zero-Emission Vehicle)/battery

PwC professionals with a deep understanding of Japan-specific challenges and needs arising from shifting industry trends provide support through our distinctive approaches and solutions.

We provide end-to-end support, from creating new businesses driven by the EV shift to transforming existing value chains.

Cybersecurity

PwC supports the development of a cybersecurity operating model to prepare for threats and vulnerabilities in digitally controlled vehicles, as well as the business risks that can arise when a security incident occurs.

Next-generation vehicle development/manufacturing

As smart mobility evolves, the way R&D (research, development and design) is performed is changing rapidly.

We provide comprehensive support to address emerging challenges, such as incorporating regulatory requirements into development processes and strengthening software information management.

Integrated mobility data platform

Leveraging our expertise in business and data architecture, we support solutions for cross-industry DX/GX themes in mobility and help realise smart cities and data-sharing platforms centred on mobility.
