Due to the recent increase in inbound leisure demand and frequent travel by our domestic senior citizens, the Japanese hotel market is enjoying high demand and it could be seen that the hotel industry has great potential. In the meantime, despite the high hotel construction cost, the number of development projects has been increasing mainly in Tokyo and Osaka, and some raise concerns of oversupply. In addition, in the hotel industry, a sense of caution exists for the expansion of the private lodgings which has also brought a mixture of both optimism and pessimism. Moreover, the labor shortage and low productivity are becoming the industry’s fundamental issue and as a solution, the robotization and enhanced information technology are now the focus.

With respect to the environment surrounding hotels mentioned, this document gives thoughts and addresses the “opportunities” and “challenges” awaiting management of the next-generation in an era of uncertainty from various viewpoints (limited service hotel chains, real estate developers, online travel agencies, investors and private lodging businesses).
