In your role, it's important to maintain high quality work outcomes. How do you ensure high-quality standards without compromising efficiency, and how does this reflect in your leadership style?
My work involves providing a service in which I always strive to exceed customer expectations. So, my key to ensuring my team succeeds without creating pressure is to empower the team.
So how do I empower them? The first way is by taking the lead through examples. If I want the team to perform a certain way, I lead by demonstrating that way first.
The second approach is regular catch-ups, feedback sessions, and sharing/coaching. I don't hesitate to invest time in coaching them, because it not only benefits that individual and myself but also contributes to the overall business.
The third approach is that I highly respect the professional experience and perspectives of my team. When tasks come up for me which are under partner review, typically Directors have already reviewed them and are satisfied. I ensure that it's not just about satisfying the partner; the working team, Directors, and Senior Managers must collaborate closely to deliver a quality product.
What is your secret to building confidence and exuding positive energy when working with people around you?
The key to building confidence and exuding positive energy when working with others starts with genuine passion for your work - where you can sincerely say, 'I love my job.' I believe that everyone who has chosen a career with PwC genuinely loves what they do. When you love your job, passion naturally radiates, without any effort to create it. There are various reasons to love a job; some are drawn to the abundant learning and growth opportunities, while others appreciate the close-knit and empathetic team. Some find joy in the moments when clients value what we build for them. In my consulting profession, it often revolves around these aspects.
Whenever I step into a presentation or event, I take pride in what I do, my team, and the business I represent for PwC. I shine because I understand that I am PwC, and I always radiate brightness!
PwC is entering its 30th year in Vietnam, and you have been with the firm for more than 27 years. What's a memory that really sticks out for you?
Throughout these years of working, there are two standout moments that are particularly memorable.
The first is a project closing. Most recently, in December, my team worked on a consulting project for a local bank. I highly valued having Board members and the Deputy CEO in charge of finance and risk present. They praised PwC's contribution and expressed sincere gratitude. Certainly, reaching this point involved some challenging days. Both the client and the consulting team had their fair share of friction, debates, and a rollercoaster of emotions. When we closed the project, it felt like we handed them a new home. Witnessing their joy as they now had new standards to govern their risk management organizational system was the greatest satisfaction for me.
Another joyful and memorable milestone was promoting the first Director in my team after becoming a Partner for a year. I remember the times we exchanged ideas and I coached her in preparation for interviews, until the moment she passed and was promoted to Director. It was an immensely gratifying experience. My newly-promoted Director had been with PwC for almost ten years at the time of the promotion. For me, it was the emotion of a builder, seeing this team mature, and seeing those who have spent years contributing to our business for nearly a decade achieve success in their careers. That joy feels even greater than achieving success in my own career!
As a leader and mother of three, how do you balance work demands with the responsibilities of nurturing your children, ensuring neither side compromises the other?
To balance energy, I believe that spending quality time together is essential. I make an effort to dedicate time to my family and children. In Hanoi, we experience four seasons, each with its own unique scenery. Every time the city transitions from one season to another, such as from winter to spring or from spring to summer, my children and I take a stroll to witness how the city transforms. It has become a tradition for us over the years. For instance, as Hanoi transitions to summer, the streets are adorned with blooming flowers named "milkwood pine flower". We search for the tree with the most abundant and fragrant blossoms. We also enjoy dining out or exploring street food together.
How do you integrate self-care routines into your busy schedule, and how do they contribute to your overall effectiveness as a leader?
I enjoy practicing yoga and swimming whenever possible. I allocate some time for physical activities to relax and rejuvenate. Maintaining this routine can be challenging due to work commitments, but I try to have at least one or two sessions per week. When practicing yoga, which involves intricate movements, a higher level of concentration is required, especially when synchronising with breathing. It naturally enhances focus. This form of exercise compels me to concentrate on my body and movements, serving as a kind of mental training.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, what messages would you like to share with other women to motivate them in pursuing career advancement and shining in all aspects?
The world is rapidly changing with technological innovations, artificial intelligence, and new business models, creating countless new opportunities. As the young generation of PwC, you have a wonderful opportunity to rise up and embrace this bright future. Keep learning, being innovative, courageous, and building your own perspectives to create unique values.
At PwC, we're not just building a company; we're building a "family" together, and it's in these moments that we contribute to each other's happiness. I believe that this happiness enhances all of us, adding value to our experiences, elevating and respecting each other. It is a special joy for the women at PwC, finding a strong connection with the company and playing a part in building a family atmosphere that's both supportive and fulfilling.
