Maris Butans

Senior Manager 

Maris is a Senior Manager at PwC Legal, who has been practicing in the legal field since 2006. Maris has extensive experience in connection with the application of European Union legislation in Latvia and especially with competition law issues. In his career, Maris has gained extensive legal experience in legal proceedings, administrative law, public procurement, and regulation of the activities of state institutions. His current projects and expertise are focused on managing the day-to-day legal functions of international clients and clients in the energy, infrastructure, retail, and insurance sectors.
As a legal expert and project manager, he has participated in several international projects on strengthening the capacity of state institutions and improving the management of important public capital companies in Latvia. Maris has gained his experience not only by working for several years in law firms in Latvia, but also by working at the Competition Council of the Republic of Latvia, where Maris has gained extensive knowledge of the operation of various industries in general, their basic economic principles and evaluations of the impact on competition.
In addition to his professional activities at PwC Legal, Maris is the head of the Fair Competition & Public Procurement subgroup of the Foreign Investors Council in Latvia (FICIL) and a member of the advisory board of the Competition Council of the Republic of Latvia.
Maris has obtained a higher education in law at the University of Latvia, Riga Graduate School of Law, and the University of Groningen (Netherlands), as well as completed higher education studies in economics at the King’s College of London.
