Foundational practices matter even more when high-grade vulnerability discovery is automated at scale. Findings from PwC’s Global Digital Trust Insights and Annual Threat Dynamics show that AI magnifies execution gaps, making disciplined implementation of the following core security practices a key determinant of resilience:

  • Rapid, risk-based patching for internet-facing and mission-critical systems.
  • Strong identity and access management, including least privilege, elimination of legacy authentication, and universal multifactor authentication, since PwC threat intelligence consistently shows attackers increasingly “log in rather than break in.”
  • Network, application, and identity‑aware segmentation around critical assets (“crown jewels”), limiting impact radius when AI‑enabled attacks inevitably bypass individual controls.
  • Detection and response tuned to abnormal behavior, not just known signatures, to surface misuse of legitimate credentials, tools, and cloud services that dominate modern AI‑accelerated attacks.
  • Focus on attack surface reduction to limit exposure from any protocols or services that are no longer required. Capabilies like Microsoft Baseline Security Mode in the M365 environment are helpful to consider in this situation.
