What attracted you to the PwC Summer internship?

I have always had an interest in a career in accountancy and wished to gain a greater understanding of working in the accounting profession. The excellent reputation of PwC for providing quality services attracted me to attend its December Insight day. The professional presentation, commitment of senior partners, directors and employees, together with the welcoming atmosphere led me to apply for a summer internship. I immediately got a good vibe about the firm and knew that I wanted to experience more.

What types of work have you experienced during your time with us?

The HR department organised a varied itinerary for my summer internship, which included experience in Tax, Advisory, Actuarial and Audit. As part of my time with the Advisory team, I researched an interesting project relating to the demography of the Isle of Man in 2050 and how this will impact people’s work and lifestyles. I attended a meeting with another major accountancy firm to discuss my research which would be used to assist with a presentation.

I also assisted with the audit of a global life assurance company, which included preparing lead schedules and transaction testing of operating expenses. I was able to witness walkthroughs which gave me a greater understanding of the operational aspects of auditing. The programme has been an invaluable learning experience.

What skills have you developed during your time here?

My time with the audit team highlighted the need for a diverse range of skills in order to be a successful accountant and I have been able to hone my intellectual as well as my interpersonal skills. The technical skills I developed included using auditing software and Microsoft Excel, and my skills were greatly enhanced with this practical experience. Communication and organisational skills are very important and it was beneficial to observe how others interacted with colleagues and clients.

What have you enjoyed the most about your time with PwC?

The most enjoyable part was meeting the people who work for the various service teams and their clients. Understanding people’s career paths and motivations for working for PwC was extremely enlightening. Everybody was friendly, easily approachable and always willing to help, putting me at ease. I am very grateful to PwC for the insight and experience the internship has given me as it has confirmed that a career in accountancy is for me.
