Bermuda Financial Controller

Our client is a Bermuda - based (re) insurance company, operating through its subsidiaries in Bermuda and London.  The company underwrites a substantial part of the Group's core portfolio.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Bermuda Financial Controller is responsible for providing accounting and support for all aspects of the Bermuda finance function. 

Core duties

  • Maintaining an accurate and timely monthly financial close process (technical and non-technical) for all Bermuda entities, with appropriate analysis, in accordance with Group requirements.
  • Maintaining financial controls, procedures and systems to Group defined standards, improving efficiency where possible.
  • Driving change and innovation, focusing on key business drivers and providing clear solutions to ensure that the business focusses on the right initiatives and the overall Group strategy.
  • Providing leadership and coaching to the Bermuda finance team that ensures the attraction, progression and retention of high performing, diverse and effective team.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of the annual IFRS financial statements, manage audit deliverables and engagement, and to ensure that any issues arising from the auditor’s management letters are properly addressed with any agreed changes being implemented.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of the quarterly and annual filings with the BMA, MBRT & NAIC. Ensure that the returns are of a high quality and a clear audit trail is produced.
  • To provide financial analysis and support to the Bermuda CFO in preparation of the quarterly board meetings and/or on an ad hoc basis.

Skills & Requirements

  • Professional accounting qualification (CA, CPA, or ACA).
  • Minimum of 10 years post qualification experience, specifically gained in an insurance/reinsurance environment, with a minimum 5 years management experience necessary.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of IFRS (specifically IFRS 9 and 17) and (re)insurance accounting principles.
  • Detailed understanding of casualty and mortgage lines of business is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of finance systems and their interaction with underwriting systems necessary.
  • Knowledge and experience of BMA and PRA regulatory reporting requirements under Solvency II.
  • Advanced and proven financial, commercial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency working in a multi-currency, multi-jurisdiction environment.
  • Must have excellent organisational skills with the ability to work on one’s own initiative.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a team of up to 4 people and to meet tight reporting deadlines.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite of application with advanced skills in Excel and Word.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexibly to meet business needs including extended hours, including weekends, as required.

Please note that this role is based in Bermuda and will require relocation.  

The company is also open-minded to an interim (c 2 years) appointment, requiring Bermuda relocation.
