Careers: Meet our people: Peter

‘I was familiar with life on the island, as I’d been visiting here for a number of years with my Bermudian fiancé – but I didn’t really know what it would be like to work here. PwC was one of the first firms I approached when I moved here as I knew their reputation. I’m glad I did. Now, I’m getting more career development opportunities than I ever imagined I would – working on large public companies, including flagship clients, with plenty exposure to our US and UK firms.

‘Relocating here has been a massive boost to my career – I’m dealing with top executives in large insurers and young, vibrant companies that are growing quickly. You find your career grows with those clients.

‘As global senior manager for the audit of one of the biggest insurance companies here, I act as the interface between PwC and the client’s executives around the world, as well as running the global audit. That means I set the scope of the work, liaise with global offices, dealing with significant audit and accounting issues. I also advise clients on a number of issues, such as raising capital.

‘I have a team of managers, senior associates and associates based here, as well as oversight of other PwC people in countries where my client operates. That’s given me excellent opportunities to travel, not just in North America and the UK but also in places like Brazil and India.

‘In many ways, the atmosphere here feels like a small office – everyone knows everyone else and we have group and office-wide social events. There’s a good family feel. It’s also great to be part of the global network – you have so many resources at your disposal in terms of research and expertise. There’s always someone somewhere who can give you information.

‘The rapid career development that’s afforded by working in an environment like PwC Bermuda means that when you’re ready for extra responsibility, you get it – and there are so many opportunities to show promise.

‘There’s a real focus on structured development – with first-class mentoring and training. Beyond that, it’s tremendously beneficial being able to work closely with some of the top people within the global firm – when you have people like that taking you under their wing, you learn a huge amount.

‘In my spare time, I’m captain of the Renegades, a local rugby club, and also play for the national team – and the firm is always supportive of me; I can always get out the door in the evening to train. When the national team was playing in the World Cup qualifiers in the Cayman Islands earlier in the year, the firm was really flexible – I was able to work from the Cayman firm while I was there; one of the benefits of working for a global network with so many firms.

‘The challenges I face in my role are tremendous – I never have the chance that I’ll have a day of boredom. The camaraderie in the office is excellent – people form lasting friendships; it’s good to work alongside people that you’d actually choose to spend your time with outside of work too.

‘Bermuda has a convivial community feel to it – people coming from London or other big cities might worry that they’ll lose out on the big-city lifestyle, but for a small place, you maintain that sense of lots going on. There are plenty of travel opportunities; we’re only a two-hour flight from New York City and you can really leverage from the location.’
