Before I started at PwC, I was an audit trainee in South Africa. Although I already had some audit experience, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve learned since joining PwC Isle of Man.
Audit is about independently checking that a company’s financial statements are accurate and fairly presented, based on evidence. As a Trainee Auditor, I’m mainly involved in the ‘Execute’ phase which involves sampling transactions, agreeing them to supporting documentation, and helping confirm figures and disclosures. I’ve progressed from primarily checking documents to taking responsibility for whole audit sections, including requesting information from the client and following up directly to resolve questions and understand the numbers.
In this way, one of the best parts of my role has been the early opportunity to work directly with clients. It started with shadowing my career accelerator in meetings, and now I’m confidently organising client meetings myself. I’ve really enjoyed building my client engagement skills so early in my career. I also value how PwC stays ahead of the curve by embracing AI tools. Learning to use these feels like a vital skill that I'll carry with me throughout my professional journey.
Coaching and development is a big part of your growth at the firm and there’s always someone experienced available to offer advice and feedback, which creates a supportive environment. It feels like a safe space where questions are welcomed and learning is encouraged.
I’ve learned so much from my colleagues, whether through coaching or just casual conversations. There’s a real focus here on delivering quality work, and I like how the way we’re stretched in our roles feels natural. You’re never just thrown in the deep end and left to swim; there’s always ongoing support and encouragement to help you grow.
When I moved to the Isle of Man in August 2025, I was a bit worried about settling into a new social environment. But everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. I really enjoy the friendly banter within the audit teams and the genuine inclusivity across the firm. It didn’t take long before I settled in and started feeling like part of a truly collaborative team.
