Title: Aeta's Meal
Background:
As part of our corporate responsibility activity to provide children’s books to a remote Aeta community in Zambales, we treated the school children to a meal ordered from a popular fast food store. A kid stopped eating and began to walk away with his half-eaten meal.
Narration:
“Do you like it?”
“Yes. This white noodle is delicious when mixed with the red sauce.”
“So why didn’t you finish eating it?”
“I will go home and bring the rest of the food to my Kuya so he can taste it too.”

Title: Yolanda before Christmas
Background:
We came to Palawan two months after typhoon Haiyan, in time for Christmas. While handing out school bags filled with essentials and school supplies, I came across Mary Rose. She was shy and silent, but her teary eyes spoke. Soon after, she managed to speak:
Narration:
“Thank you for the donations sir. We have no food and electricity. There was no help. I thought we were completely forgotten.
I prayed really hard and God answered my prayers by bringing you here.
Our Christmas will be merry again.”
Values:
Generosity - A small act of generosity can bring great hope to a community.
Title: Lola Ising
Background:
One of the social enterprises that joined the Developmental Social Enterprise Awards 2016 is operating in Southern Mindanao. During the vetting process, we found out that their cooperative and production facility are both situated within a community occupied by armed rebels. Since there was time to spare, I went around to have a chat with some locals. There I met Lola Ising who was alone tending to her grandchildren.
Narration:
“My sons left me; went to the mountains to become rebels.”
“Do they have families? Where are they now?”
“Their wives joined them while the children are left to my care.”
“How do you do it?”
“I sell kamote. You know I’m old but I gather every last strength so I can take care of them.
Every night, I pray to God for a longer life. What will happen to them when I leave?”
Values:
The love of the grandparents can be as much as a parents' love for their own children.
Title: A Tale in Sagada
Background:
While waiting for the sun to rise and looking down at the homes on the foothills of Echo Valley, I asked our tour guide Manong about life in Sagada.
Narration:
"Many here left their families to find work abroad, but I didn’t because I have one here. I accompany tourists and show them amazing places here in Sagada.
I told my Australian guest that they have a beautiful opera house in Sydney. He was surprised how come I know? I was very proud to tell him - I have a son working there."
