A practical manual for creating safe spaces has been developed for the Police and Border Guard Board. Its purpose is to provide comprehensive, evidence-based information on spatial planning to aid in crime prevention and enhance community security.
In public spaces, it is crucial that every user—whether parents with children, cyclists, or drivers—finds a safe way to move around and use the space with minimal disturbance to others. Although it is evident that security should be thoughtfully integrated into spatial planning, it is unfortunately not currently a priority that is actively and proactively considered. This oversight results in poorly considered spatial solutions that create various safety issues, ranging from discomfort and inconvenience to dangers to life and health.
Security problems in public spaces already present challenges and these problems end up on the desks of community police officers. As part of proactive police work, community police officers aim to contribute their security-related knowledge to spatial planning.
As part of this project, we assisted the Police and Border Guard Board in developing a practical toolkit and guidance materials to help community officers understand spatial planning documents and support municipal planning officials in enhancing public space security.
