Joining our Advisory Services team, the Coordinator - Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) / Media and Communication will be project-based and seconded on a short-term contract (three months) to the COVID-19 Vaccine Taskforce (Taskforce) to support the COVID-19 vaccine delivery in Papua New Guinea.

The Coordinator RCCE / Media and Communication will be based at the National Control Centre for COVID-19 (NCC) and reporting to the Incident Manager, Manager Communications and Training, and the M&E Manager. The role involves supporting the NCC to provide daily media statements and briefs through the different media platforms (print, TV, radio and social media) on new information and the latest updates on the response. Part of the role also involves organising press media releases, monitoring social media and supporting social wrap.

Your key responsibilities in this role will include the following:

Provide regular media communications support

  • Developing media statements which involves writing media statements on latest updates and new information in collaboration with key members of the team including Surveillance, Risk Communications, Laboratory, Logistics, vaccinations, Clinical and others

  • Ensuring daily media statements are developed and released on all new and updated information through different media platforms

  • Coordinating and organising weekly media conferences with high level leadership for strategic issue and for any new public health measures

Effective coordination and collaboration

  • Liaising with the Office of the Deputy Controller and Incident Manager daily on relevant matters pertaining to the updates

  • Working closely with the office of the Incident manager, the key partners and stakeholders and the different cluster leaders and vaccine

  • Working with the NCC media team to provide updates for dail media releases

  • Working collaboratively with key stakeholders including the Health Promotion Unit of the National Department of Health (NDoH), PNG Police Media, UNICEF, WHO, PNG Health Minister Media, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and other partners

  • Engaging with a broad range of partner organisations and institutions, target audiences and official representatives from the national authorities to obtain information and as necessary provide advice on risk communication, vaccination, testing and on importance of Niupela Pasin compliance. 

Monitor and counteract misinformation

  • Collaborating with the social listening and main line media team and key partners including the NDoH media team to monitor and proactively counter false rumours and misinformation, and address fears and concerns.

  • Monitoring hotline, social media and other feedback mechanisms and address concerns on misinformation on COVID-19 infections, testing and the COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Proactively addressing public concerns and managing rumours, misinformation, fear, anxiety and stigma. Provide timely responses to public concerns and frequently asked questions.

 

You must at a minimum possess the following:

  • a journalism qualification with a degree, diploma or equivalent with scientific news and excellent writing skills

  • at least five years of experience in journalism with a range of other scholarly disciplines including marketing, psychology and behavioral sciences

  • at least three years experience in health communications, risk/crisis communication, communication for development and poses health communication skills or relevant.

  • knowledge in basic computer skills

  • exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to enable professional interaction with relevant stakeholders

  • excellent level of attention to detail, with the ability to maintain a high level of technical advice and guidance in achieving set targets and goals

  • able to work under pressure when required to provide updates and briefs as the COVID-19 virus evolves

  • have a flexible proactive approach towards work including the ability to prioritise and re-prioritise 

  • have the ability to deal with sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality

  • have the ability to work under minimal supervision.
