Materiality assessment is an important part of the sustainability reporting process. New European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) require companies to publish information on sustainability matters by applying a double materiality principle, i.e., to assess how it affects environment and society (impact materiality) and which sustainability aspects produce or may produce significant financial effects on the company (financial materiality). Third party assurance on ESG/sustainability reports is the form of an external audit applicable to the entire sustainability report or to certain information presented in the sustainability report. PwC provides external assurance services in accordance with the requirements of ISAE 3000, which is applicable to non-financial assurance services. Assurance on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is addressed by another standard, ISAE 3410, which supplements ISAE 3000 with specific provisions on the audit of GHG emissions. External assurance helps to build trust in your sustainability or ESG report’s findings and provides assurance to stakeholders that it discloses substantiated data. After the entry into force of the CSRD, limited assurance became mandatory and it is foreseen that in the future the review of a sustainability report carried out by an external auditor will be required to provide an even higher level of assurance – reasonable assurance, which is similar to the audit of financial statements.
